I think the pipe filled up with water and rusted off at the bottom a few times. Here is the truck,I got out the arc air and had my way with it.  I cut the pipe off with it too.Ranger 250 turned all the way up, 80 psi air, 5/32 or 3/16 electrode.I hope no one tells me that coupling is cast iron. One I used 6010 for a root pass and finished up with 3/32 7018.  The other one I just did with 3/32 7018 at 85 or so amps.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Hope for your sake i am wrong, but i think that all "banded" couplers are cast.

Reply:Nice "Real world weldin" repair and unique use of that coupler.A hole in that mount base plate inside the pipe/coupler would prevent any water build-up.Gotta say I don't miss that white stuff!!!MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Nice repair David. Hard to see from the photos and you're Johnny-on-the-spot but could there be a fatigue component to the failure too? The weight of the boom and an angled support would give a forwards loading to the support frame and maybe cause a fracture starting at the rear of it. Vibration in transit would also contribute to it.I don't envy you the snow either. Although when I was in California, the lower humidity made things feel different than they do here when you go to our snow regions. Reply:Hi  David,             Nice job, good strong no frills repair, Like the look of your chipping hammer, handle shows signs of you being a busy man, Best regards  Gordon.
Reply:I bought the coupler at Home Repo, so its probably chineeese made.  It didn't weld too good, but I don't think its cast iron.  Could be cast steel, although crappy.  Not much accessibility to weld or cut.  I couldn't even get a 4.5" grinder in there to clean up the base.  I did manage to grind the pipe. There is another support above the piece I welded on, you can see it in the last picture on the left. The boom rest was "resting" on the top of the back window.  Now the boom sits on it 6" further back.  I pulled it way back with a come along before welding it.The boom can be powered down.  When I was done, I tried to bend the rest and it didn't go any where.  Thanks for the compliments.  It IS hard to weld round stuff like that.  Turning the electrode holder to keep a good bead and keep the slag behind the weld took some doing. Here is the brace.  I did not weld this   I thought about burning it off and re welding it, but accessibility was pretty bad there too.  Duane, you are right, I shoulda puta hole in the base plate for drainage.David Last edited by David R; 11-18-2008 at 06:24 AM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I was looking at all the rust on that truck in the picture and the first thing that popped into my head was "That reminds me of NY". I looked at the your location and LOL'd. One of my first jobs was at a shop in NY that sold & serviced snowplows and we had some landscaper/plow trucks come in that would make that service truck look like a show queen in comparison. A drain hole on the bottom and/or a top cap would have been a good idea. Not just for rust prevention, but to prevent ice cracking. If the uprights collect enough water, once the weather drops below freezing, the water can turn to ice and split the tube wide open. It's not an uncommon mode of failure. If you want to check for problems in the future, just whack the tubing at lowest point with a ball pein hammer a few times and look/listen/feel for water entrapment or internal corrosion damage. I like to check tubular support columns and railings with the "whack test" even if they look OK on the outside. The first time you break what is supposedly 1/8" wall steel tube with a 16 oz ball pein, you'll be convinced it's not a bad idea to check. If you can demonstrate to a customer that a thin tube of rust held together by 5 layers of old paint is the only thing preventing them from falling off a building they tend to haggle less on the price to fix it.-Matt------------------------------------------
Reply:When welding in tight places,  I "bend" the electrode to get into the corner.  Of course,  you have to becareful and not weld into the area where the flux pops off at the bend.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I bet you like using that air arc. That was a field job too..right?Good work weld it like you own it
Reply:Sure looks like a cast iron nipple to me.  I hope it holds up.  When ever I use plumbing stuff for repairs, I always buy the "black iron" stuff.  Couplings are normally cast steel, not cast iron.  Easy to weld.Ditto on the drain hole.
Reply:Might be cast iron..might be cast steel...I dont really know, but if it is a banded coupler it is not a high pressure coupler and it is a cast of some sort and is not  intended to be welded to anything. At least that is what I have been told (I could be wrong) . Hope it works out for you.
Reply:If its cast steel I am home free.  It is crappy cast what ever it is.  It did NOT weld like cast iron.  I think it will be fine, I stressed it pretty good after the repair was complete.  I powered the boom down on it until it wouldn't go any more.  The boom rest stayed in place.  Nothing cracked or bent.  I just made sure I didn't buy a galvanized coupler. Now I am going to have to buy another one and do a spark test. Stay tuned.Lewray, I did it in the driveway to my shop.  I only have a 10 foot door.  I could have wheeled the V350 out there and used that.  It has more balls than the ranger 250 for the arc air, but looks like I had enough.  That is probably the hardest the ranger has worked ever.  The weld in pic #3 was a good 1/2" or more thick.  I just burned it off at the base till I had a ring of weld left.  No room to get torches in there.  I prefer the arc air anyhow.David Last edited by David R; 11-18-2008 at 08:08 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:David RNice repair. Don’t others realize if you did put a drain hole in you wouldn’t get to repair it again in a year of two  Job preservation as they say.Seriously, when you weld on any vehicle, truck, car or whatever, do you disconnect battery negative? Especially on late models equiped with computer controlled engine, brakes, air bags, etc.I have done some welding recalls on cars in the late 80’s and we had to pull the Neg. battery terminal  before welding. I guess there was a chance that voltage surges could mess up computer and or electronics.Just curious.

Reply:OK, its cast steel or something.  It said "Black" on the label.I did a drill test and spark test.  Both said its not cast Iron.If it was cast Iron, I would not have got any curly chips, just powderFor the spark test, the sparks would have been red with out tails and not gone too far.David ....  Life is good.  Last edited by David R; 11-19-2008 at 08:09 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
