Well it was prettymuch a straight forward fix..I used the broken piece and just welded it back on..It was plenty thick enough..Started by beveling the ends where the weld was going on the piece with the belt sander and the die grinder on the block..Put the piece in place then ran the tap onto the hole then clamped the piece with the tap in place..Tacked the piece on..Ran the tap thru...Removed the tap..Welded the backside..Ran the tap thru..Removed it..Welded the front and side..Ran the tap thru..Removed it..Ground off the welds and rewelded over that..Made sure it was done all the way around...Then ground and filed the flat areas flat again..Ron installed the starter and it's not going anywhere! Some pics below of the installation but it was pretty easy all in all..When asked "How Much?" I just said "Merry Christmas!" BTW In the last pic that is NOT a crack.. 1/16" 5356 Filler..3/32" Red End..180? Amps..Gas Mix..Engine was done in place on the bench..I picked it up in the air with the hoist to do the bottom welds upside down..It was too low to the bench...I do all the stuff nobody wants to touch.. ...zap! I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Nice fix.Oh oh, where's the dime? You were just one bead away from a perma-mount starter!I wonder if anyone has ever welded a starter on?

Reply:Nice Job Zap!! BTW, thank you for the post. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Of course that piece had to crack in one of the worse spots to try to weld. Especially given that you did not want to fill in the treads on that hole.Nice work and a wonderful present to someone.Hope you had a Happy Turkey Day,TomCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back. |
