Hey everyone! We have been in the process of switching welders at work. We went from an older ESAB to new lincoln 355m. We have noticed a lot more feed problems with the lincolns, especially with .030 wire (the smallest we use). I keep the drive roll loose so it will slip rather than bird nest but in piece work this can really slow you down. All of the wire comes in 500 lb. boxes (lincoln copper coated). Any thoughts on preventing these feed problems would be great.
Reply:what kind of feed problems ? have you tryed to tighten the feed roll'sChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Check out this thread, may be the same kind of problem.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=7032
Reply:should have went with a Miller. 8^)) sorry could not resistdosent lincoln use the same drive wheels for the .030 and .035 i think i would tighten it up a bit, has it shown any signs of birds nesting, also what liner is in it ? might need to downsize the liner. if you keep switching wire sizes from small to large alot maybee look into a second gun and cable set up for each, it would be faster than changing liners, or maybee a spool gun option for the thin stuf but that could get expensive using the lil rols. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:another thought is you might have gotten a bad role, i had that problem befor. we realy need a lil more info as to what the problem is. is it nesting or is the feed slipping ?? a bad role can cause it to not feed out stedy as its tangeld up in the role so it can not pull it off. if thats the case try another role. try the simple fixes first. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:I have just updraded the drive rolls on my Fronius machine with nylon rolls theres no groove in them and they are used for all materials we had them fitted for alli but i must say they have fixed all of the problems with wire feed
Reply:Hey everyone, thanks for the input. When I tighten up the drive roll it birds nests frequently. It also gets a lot of spatter on the tip causing wire drag and eventually burnback even though the burnback is set o.k. All of our liners are for .045 wire no matter what an individual machine is loaded with (our guns are sent to a contractor for repair and this makes it "easier"). When we got the ne welders they switched to a CO2 gas mix for more penetration which cause a lot more spatter. Generally, we don't weld much material under .188" so most of us run high wire and heat.  Thanks
Reply:maybee dedicate one welder to do the lil stuff and have a smaller liner put in? or you could pick up one of the new 180's for that, i herd they are prety sweet. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:I had a similar problem, the wire wouldn't bird nest but it wouldn't feed out of the gun smoothly. I changed the tip to the next bigger size and that seemed to have solved the problemSure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
