Fresh out of highschool and have my first welding job interview thursday for a barge company. Was lookin for some advice in case they ask me to weld for them. They run 6011-7018 on 1/4" plate mostly doing floor patches on barges. Now my ? is they run 140-150 amps because of how dirty and rusty the **** they weld on is. Ive never burnt 6011 at 140 especially damn overhead. Some advice from yall would be helpful. Thanks
Reply:Practice. You have a welder at home?  You gotta do it before you interview for it.  Not much way around that...
Reply:Forewarned is forearmed.  Better to practice in private before you do a public demonstration.  Check the 7018 you will be welding with, do not be afraid to let them know you want rod right out of the oven.Good Luck.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:I have a cousin and also a coworker who have welded on Ohio river barges. It is a dirty, nasty and sometimes dangerous job. Not trying to scare you off but be prepared for what you are getting into. You will get crammed down into a deep dark damp hole for hours. You can ask for a fresh new rod right out of the oven for your test, but dont be surprised if they laugh and end the interview right there. Chances are they will want you to weld for your test with the crap they have hauled back up from the dry dock (and NOT just kicked into the river) Turnover time is what barge repair is all about, the quicker that barge is patched up and back out on the river the quicker it is making money. Dont be afraid to crank up the heat and run the rod fast. Like always practice, practice, practice. You will be expected to weld in ALL positions (some you didnt even know you could get your body into  )  If you do blow the test, ask if you can come back at another time and test again.    Good luck

When you make it onto this job, I want you to be damn careful when you are sent intoconfined spaces to work. There should be a safety procedure set up for doing this type of work, and it MUST be adhered to unconditionally!!! If you end up working in an atmosphere that will not support human life, or in an explosive atmosphere, you will not get a second chance. I spent many years working in such confined spaces, and although the work was mostly hot and uncomfortable, I always felt safe. This is in no way meant to scare you off this job, but rather to try and educate a young fellow starting out. I offer you the best of luck.Bgbkwndo.
