A guy called and asked how much to weld a small crack in a alum oil pan? I said $15 when he got to the shop i asked where is the small crack? He said right there can't you see it? Nope just that Huge one right there Attached Images
Reply:You've got to hold true to your word...$15 for the crack...But $30 for the hole seems fair.Proud to be a UNION worker.  Better pay, better benefits, better work environment.  UA Unions = working for the working class!!

Reply:So, did you find any parts of the rods or pistons in there??!!! What did they hold in there, oil, or was this a part from the Hindenburg??And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:I would like to know how it happened.    Jumping over R/R tracks?...or hitting a sassquatch aka Bigfoot weld it like you own it
Reply:My bet is that the owners car is quite low. The vw guys smash pans to the point of destroying the oil pickups on a regular basis. I know people who have been through 5+ pans on cars with vr6's My bunny has a 1/4in plate on the bottom of it to prevent such headaches I paid $100 for a cast aluminum pain to get repaired like the one in the picture a few years ago before I owned a tig he got a good deal for that repair imho.Last edited by chrisbmx68; 12-29-2008 at 12:30 PM.
Reply:I cracked the aluminum oil pan on my old honda civic, and I tig welded it back up.  But it didn't weld very well, there were so many contaminates in the metal from scraping on the ground.Miller Dynasty 200DX Tig Welder
Reply:it really helps to vee out the cracked area with a carbide burr and preheat for a good long time with a propane torch. There is so much oil that seeps into the cast aluminum pan's pores

Reply:When some one says "It will only take 5 mins".  I say SURE!  Its a buck a minute.  It bails me out most of the time.  Not only that, but they are watching the clock instead of watching me do the job.  Nice looking repair no matter how much you charged him.I also pass the tig torch over the crack before adding filler to bring out all the crap.  Then clean it again and weld.  It makes the job easier for me.  Clean and preheat on one pass. I learned that right here at this web site.David Last edited by David R; 12-29-2008 at 06:36 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.I woulda found out what  new one cost, and charged 30% less.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:can  you   even buy that much filler for $15?
Reply:Wow! A quote of __________ without seeing it. I have learned from a couple of those mistakes as well.Like has been said cast alum pans = bitch to weld. Oil in pores requires degreasing is hot chem bath. Ving the cracks, heating the pan, an alot of prayer and/or skill.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
