Reply:Hi cold steel, End use of item? How long of a seam? In position or not? What kind of power source?
Reply:I am guessing you are doing a test piece at school??? Make up several sets of joint at one time to be efficient.  You can bevel cut out your weld and start again with very little waste.   The width of your land as well as your 3/32 gap is critical.  I would go for a 3/32 land to start with.  Check that each land is the same width by comparing it with a 3/32 electrode wire.  Check that the edge is straight by setting a straight edge against the land and look for light spaces.  When tack welding your pieces together make dead sure that the surfaces on the back side of the root are dead even.  If there is a high-low the root will melt more on one side than the other.  You can do a properly prepared root with your eyes closed, it is so easy.  If the gap varies or the land varies you have to work hard for the full length of the joint.   Spend twice as much time preparing your pieces as welding them.  You cannot be too fussy.
