A friend of a friend whom I know got divorced and had to move his stuff to storage somewhere because he was relocating to an apartment in Dallas. His previous activities included building large trailered barbecues. So he asked it I would store them until he got reestablished, stating I could use them while I kept them for him. His stuff includes a brand new Evolution 230 metal saw, a large manual bar bender, roller, notcher, a hydraulic tubing bender, and a blacksmith forge. Pretty much completes off my shop. He says it will be quite a while before he will ask for them back.Steve in Central TX
Reply:I've got one for you... guy I knew calls and says he thinks his wife is going to file for divorce and wants to "hide" a bunch of tools and equipment from her so she can't lay claim to them and force him to sell them. He offers to "pay storage" for a few months to a year as he's afraid if he rents from a storage facility she or the lawyers might find out and then he's in trouble with the judge for "hiding assets". I agree to rent him the space (about 800sq ft) for 80 bucks a month. Some months later I find out he's moved out of state to be with his "girl friend" who apparently had also been married. Cell phone doesn't work.... well I don't hear from him for over 2yrs and placed the legal notice in the paper that he has 30days to respond or his property is being sold for the amount due.Set a date for the sale and about a dozen guys show up to bid. I told them it's "one lot" all of it or nothing and told them what the bill was and that bidding would start at that amount. All of them walked away. They were all flea market guys as all the ad said was "contents of storage space being sold to settle debt". Replacement cost on the stuff was about 20K and it was probably worth 8-9K pieced out.So my "friend" shows up about 3yrs after the sale wanting to know if he can give me 1,000 bucks and get his stuff.... Now THAT was interesting.....Had to get a cop to "explain it" to him.BTW his ex-wife did very well for herself after kicking him to the curb and I think that was digging on him too.

Reply:I just figured out that the metal bender is actually a Whitney Metals angle iron shear/notcher/bender. It will work on angle up to 1/4" I found one on Ebay and learned that it will shear 2x2 angle, put a 90 degree notch in it then bend it at the notch to make a right angle. The operating lever is a 2"x1/2"x6' chunk of metal! The saw is an Evolution 230 with little use. The manual says it will cut up to 12mm mild steel. Might be useful in fabbing a new metalworking bench out of some angle I have lying around. Gotta nail the Whitney down to the floor however!!Steve

Reply:Kaferhaus - Maybe you should at least offer to pay him the difference between storage fees and your own appraised value on (so called) sale day? That's what a judge might order
