What is the best method for balling green band tungsten?Grind to a point and arc to steel in dcen or dcep?
Reply:Balling of pure (green) tungsten would be for aluminum which is AC and I just use a blunt end and let it ball up naturally - which occurs rather quickly - in the course of welding. But this applies to transformer type machines. Typical recommendation for Inverter machines is sharpened same as would be used for DC.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:In my limited experience, a lot of inverters do not like pure tungsten. I use thoriated or lanthanated.
Reply:Thanks guys. Its a ghetto setup tranformer machine. Im gonna part it out, sell it, and buy a new Dynasty 200. Done with using this thing. Gonna buy what i need once.

Reply:The way that most textbooks will say to do it is as follows:Blunt the end of the tungsten and hold perpendicular to a copper block. Put machine on DCEP and strike arc at low current until a ball beings to form and is about 2/3 the diameter of the tungsten. Then switch to AC as weld as normal.Have we all gone mad? |
