I've recently installed a gate across the driveway.  As an unexpected side effect I can't get UPS/FedEx to deliver.  They used to put things on the front porch.  This was out of sight and had a low probability of theft.  Now they have to drop packages at the side of a busy road.  So I made a cage. The hinge on the lock and the lid are 3/4" pipe with 1/2" round as the pin.  Not the best matchup for a precision fit, but it was in the scrap pile.  Pins are all welded and cannot be removed.  The box is 2' by 2' by 3'.  The reason is that size can be cut from one 4'x8' sheet of expanded metal.  The frame is 1"x1"x1/8" angle.  The expanded metal is 3/4" #9 (each leg is about 1/8" thick).  I was a little worried about attaching the lock base to the expanded metal so I welded *every* cross point.  The lock base won't be the easiest place to break in.  I added the handles to give a place to attach a chain.  Otherwise they'd steal my package AND my cage.  The handles are 1/2" round bent with a vise and a BFH.My painting skills are bad.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:I keep a locked gate now too since I moved the folks onto the place.  Then on top of that I got a not too friendly dog.The UPS guy generally just puts stuff over the gate, but I'm not too comfortable with that either.I think you have a  good idea.  Can you mount it in concrete or something?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Nice. Would work for everything but oversize stuff. How do you handle the lock? Leave it open and let them close it? Or give them a combination?QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS

Reply:That is a combination lock which can have the number changed easily. It used to be a Corbin 'Sesame' before Master copied it (or bought the patent?); they've been around since the early 60's at least. Why do I know these things?  I would also chain the box to something suitable; it's interesting how even a large box like that could walk away with someone "who was just admiring the paint job".What about when it rains? Now you need to add an umbrella holder to the side?

Reply:The cage is now installed.  It's chained to a 4" pipe that 2+ feet in concrete.  There's a welded cross piece on the 4" pipe so the chain can't just be slipped over the top of the pipe.  The chain is fixed with another padlock.  The combo lock is left showing all zeros.  I was thinking you have to dial in the correct combo before you can insert a change key, but now I'm thinking I'd better double check.  If I'm correct then the lock won't do anybody else much good since they wouldn't know the combo.  After I figure out if I like where it's placed, I might concrete the box down.If anybody gets really serious about stealing it, the easiest is probably to cut the chain.  Any larger set of bolt cutters will do it quickly and relatively quietly.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
