Last week our company was contracted to assemble this "Crab" for a big dredging company who will be doing some work in our area(Cape May, N.J.). Its about 30 feet high and constructed of mainly aluminum. It is used to survey the ocean floor where they will be dredging. It took alot of welding when this thing was originally constructed. I took some pics for you guys.....................Rich Attached ImagesLincoln 255XT Power Mig Lincoln Precision Tig 225Hypertherm Powermax 30

Reply:If those aren't machine welds someone is a friggin' AMAZING aluminum welder! best I've seen!
Reply:Is that aluminum where we see the #4 welded in, my guess would have been that it was galvanized steel. Are the legs telescopic, if so what is the hight of the cab floor (30' ?) as pictured AND extended? What does it use for engine power? and do they use regular hydraulic oil or something more environmentally friendly to power the wheels and steering?Last edited by tessdad; 02-07-2009 at 06:35 PM.Reason: reread original postJust my opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:I have no idea how they were welded. they do look really good. as far as that corner goes it was all aluminum. everything was pretty much aluminum. most of the pieces appeared to be 1 inch thick to about 3/4. the bolts and pins were stainless except for a couple of rusty ones that i think may have been galvanized. it had a diesel engine to run the hydralics and i was told the height was 30 feet.Lincoln 255XT Power Mig Lincoln Precision Tig 225Hypertherm Powermax 30
Reply:here s a few more pics. the first one is an old WWII bunker that was about a couple hundred yards away from where we assembled the crab. the second is a screen for catching bombs before they get sucked up into the dredge(scary isnt it). and the third is just a picture of the lighthouse in Cape May. Reply:Wow those welds are serious. Nice work!! I see your in cape may. Have you been to wildwood lately? I usually go down there in the summer. How is it down there .Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:Shane I live about a half hour north of cape may just outside of ocean city. Things are quiet this time of year. it was a little cold when we assembled the crab. It must have been in the teens and very windy that day.Lincoln 255XT Power Mig Lincoln Precision Tig 225Hypertherm Powermax 30 |
