My Miller 130 is about 13 years old but has only had about two or three rolls of wire run through it. Today it would not feed .030 or .035 wire. The small feed wheel (powered) turns but the wire does not pass thru the welding gun. When I try to just pull the wire thru manually (after releasing the feed clamp) the wire seems very hard to pull, so it's no wonder the machine will not pull it thru. I would appreciate suggestions regarding where to start looking for the problem..........thanks..........no_arc
Reply:Mig gun cable wire liner feed problems in MIG sometimes occurr because of the following.Contaminants in the liner are usually rust but can be airborne metallic dust that as accumulated on the wire spools used in the unit over time. Before a replacement is purchased try cleaning the liner first.Liners can be sucessfully cleaned by coiling them up to fit in an open top 20 litre (5 gallon) drum, washing them out in kerosine and then washing in metholated spirits to remove the kerosine residue. Blow the liner dry in the direction of wire feed with an an air duster gun. While the liner is out check for kinks by running it through your fingers -one end to the other.Don,t forget to check the roller lead in and out guide wires for bends and /or contamiation. When replacing the guide, I save the off liner off cut for this reason.Grahame
Reply:I clamp on the wire a round piece of felt with a split in it to wipe the wire prior to entry into the liner. Haven't had any problems in over ten years of use with my little gold star 130 miller.
Reply:also.. check the brake on the spool. i have mine set to just barely stop the spool. |
