I work as a Maint. Mech, We use all Miller welders(mig, tic and stick). I ran across a lincoln weld pac 100 hd for 50.00 bucks so I got it.That little welder is GREAT within its range as a flux core welder. I have a few questions! i have a 30 amp breaker at 120 volts will this hurt it(says 20 amps on cover). They sell an Alum Liner and parts,i want to weld Alum at home(thin,1/8 th of an inch). I would like to find out if the spool gun the sell(max 130 amps) can be used on this welder? thanks Gary
Reply:Hi Gary. There are quite a few of us who have, or had this welder, and yeah, it is a great little machine. You can in theory weld aluminum with it, but I can tell you, it is not worth the effort involved. The wire is just too soft for use without a spoolgun to get good results. Even with a teflon liner, when I did it, I had wire jamming issues and birdnesting at the rollers. Also, the unit does not have advanced features like hot start, and the little machine just doesn't make the necessary heat to create a good puddle on aluminum. As for the 30A breaker, you are fine. The unit will only take the power it needs, and the larger breaker simply means there is some power reserve available to the breaker that is not drawn through the system. If you ran it on a 15A breaker, you may trip it, but on a 20 or 30A you are in good shape. Good luck!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Word of advice: Are you sure that 30amp circuit is 120v and not 220v. 30 amp circuits and above are normally 220v. You might want to check with a voltmeter 1st. Or go to the circuit panel and make sure isn't wired to two 120v lines.A mistake could cost you your machine.Last edited by specter; 09-05-2008 at 12:52 PM.Reason: typpoCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:specter,A 30 amp 120V circuit is not a 'standard' household/residential circuit, but it certainly is a standard breaker. But good mention to check things out first.Although it would take a bonehead to wire a 5-15R outlet to a 30A-240V circuit, sometimes stupid happens.Using the machine on a 30amp 120V circuit is just fine.  IIRC, buried in the notes in the manual is mention of doing just that.  Either it was one of the small MIG machines, or a small plasma cutter (MIller 375 maybe?) that mentioned. The Lincoln SG100 spoolgun is not plug-n-play compatible with the 'older' Lincoln small MIG machines, there is no control connection from gun to machine (and thus circuit board).  It is plug-n-play with the PM140/180 machines.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:I also own the migpak 100 hd. I would like to weld aluminum. One of the things that is required, is the spool gun. Will it weld aluminum that has a greater thickness of 1/8 inch if it is preheated with a touch?
