What nis R Stamp welding ?

I saw this in a help wanted ad for steamfitter in Akron, Oh. They wanted you to be 6g certified which I know what that is and also R stamp welding certified. What the heck is R stamp welding ?

Reply:You can't be just "R" stamp certified.The "R" stamp is an NBIC certification that a Company has, not an individual welder.A pressure vessel that has been fabricated is "U" stamped and when it has been in service and requires a repair the contruction company that makes the repair must have an "R" stamp.Welders performing the repair must be qualified to the "R" stamp holders qualified welding procedures.QCRobert

Reply:Our company is coming up for our "U", "PP" and "R" stamp cert review which will cost $3800, and that's just a start because that does not include our insurance or cost of AI involvement.

Reply:I'm in Tennessee and work in a "s" stamp code shop. I've been told it would take around $20,000 to get yourself a "s" stamp and that is if you have people that can demonstrate the fit-up/welding.
Reply:We have a "S", "U" and "R" stamp and believe me when I say that the fit-up and welding is the easy part of it all. Paper work and ASME code review is about 75% of the work.During our review I wear the hat of the QC manager and qualified weldor.
Reply:It is funny you guys mention it, because I thought the joint review went pretty smoothly.  I understand that paying the AI, AI Supervisor, licensing, and other necessary personnel are factored into that cost, but I think it could be done here for less than $10k.If you have all your ducks in a row, it's not that big of a deal.  Getting it all set up though, that's a different matter altogether.
Reply:You are also required to buy the current edition of ASME books which is close to 8K needed just for an "R" stamp certification.

Reply:And then i said to myself last year why not get r stamped then i looked at the prices i decided it wasnt a good investment i really dont like climbing in and out of boilers to change tubes anyway plus there is union companies around that do it so ill stick to my structural work myself.I forgot how to change this.
