With Proper Safety and stuff...If i Purchased an Oxy/acedaline Torch or Propane Torch would i be able to Heat up Broze/Copper/Steel/Iron similiar enough to a Forge to work on it?Would a Propane Torch Have the High Heat needed? Also anyone have an anvil i could have? lolty for answers
Reply:Where are you located ?Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:It is possible to heat metal hot enough to work with a heating torch.   I routinely use a oxy-acetylene torch to heat metal hot enough to bend, as the focused heat is better for sharp bends. It is more troublesome to try to draw out a point with only a heating torch, but it can be done.  I suggest that you set up a rack or something to hold the torch while you hold the part.A real forge is of course better for most purposes, and are not terribly expensive to make.   I like the propane forges, no chimney needed, no smells to bother the neighbors. Reply:i am located somewhere (:so a Propane Torch can Heat up hot enough to work with?...or do i need an Oxy/Acedaline?Well from Web Sources a Propane Torch can burn at around 3500,,,and most metals melt at 3000....so i should be set...just need a good work tableLast edited by Aninja; 07-25-2011 at 04:27 PM.
Reply:I've seen small propane forges made using the air/propane torches like Goss torches that plumbers use, usually with larger tips. The key to having this work will be how much heat you can get out of the torch. The small bottle propane torches don't give off enough heat to do something like this well. A larger professional torch like the Goss and Turbotorch brand ones will give you enough heat, and will need to be run off 20 lb or larger propane cylinders not the tiny ones.I think someone here posted up about having used the Goss torch to make a forge. I'll have to hunt for the link. I just picked up a Goss Propane torch to do just this..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:The little Bernzomatic torches don't put out much heat, if only because you can't get that much propane out of a small bottle.  The laws of physics apply, I could explain if you are interested in physics.  But also they are not designed to put out that many BTUs.A large propane-air torch would be a better choice.   However, the heat inside the forge would probably damage the torch.   My forge uses propane-air burners, but the mouth of the burner, the hot part, is stainless steel, much more resistant to heat than regular steel. The knifemakers use very small forges, you can research on the web what kind of forges they use.   But the forges are so small that whatever you put into it has to be straight, so very limiting in what you do with it.A oxygen-propane or an oxygen-acetylene torch would get hot enough to do some forging.  That is what I use for bending. The last time I needed to heat something big, I set up a large propane air-torch on one side, and used a large "rosebud" oxy-propane torch on the other.   The propane tanks started to ice up, due to the withdrawal rate.  I should have made a slot forge, could have heated up the whole area at once.  Next time......RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:ya...figured i get something small and use it to reshape like copper pipes since they pretty cheap for practice then move onto steel
Reply:If you are serious you will want to invest in a pro type air propane torch at a minimum. My LWS has the import knock of Goss propane rigs for less than $100 usually on sale, and you can often find the 20lb propane tanks out on the curb on trash days when people toss their old grills. The small home owner units won't do what you want and lack the heat for steel. Better would be either an Oxy propane or Oxy acetylene torch setup. Then you would have plenty of heat available with the right tips..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:see website artistblacksmith.com for propane forge plans...i regularly use oa with a small welding tip to quickly bring small stuff (1/2" square hr)to a yellow hot...a couyple of fire bricks  can be used t oreflect the heat back into the workpiece if you are working on small stuff..id say get the oa, its quicker   than anything else...
