i understand that rebar is a poor quality metal. would it be posible for one to forge horse shoes from rebars for decoration and coat racks and such? or have i really gotta spend some pennies and get some round bar? what i wanna do is bend in a horse shoe shape and beat it flat so that it looks like a horse shoe.i have an interest in rustic stuff and have kinfolk in the mountais where i may can turn a profit.
Reply:Or you could save yourself all the effort and just buy the horse shoes! I think people sell them to be used on horses....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:takes all the fun out of it. hand forged = money = good day. tryin to learn here.
Reply:It might be a bit of effort to hammer the ridges out but I reckon it could be done. Depends if you are trying to hide the look of rebar or not, also the rebar might be more a different price than the roundbar, but just a guess.

Reply:i have no idea what iam lookin at on that link man.
Reply:Try to find real "wrought iron" scrap. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrought_iron
Reply:Call up your local farrier. Used horshoes normally go home with them.  You can make all sorts of nifty things from the shoes and horse people are easily parted from their money....
Reply:congratulations.. you been told yes no and maybe..grab a hammer and make one and see if you like it.....if not you can buy one for three dollars at tractor supply.
Reply:Mid GaIll ask my friend, he dose that kinda work and send you a pmLearning one rod at a time
Reply:Rebar will work just fine. Most rebar in the USA is not "bad", its just uneven, in terms of what they make it out of.It has a minimum strength requirement, but no rules as to what you can throw in the pot when you are making it.It forges just fine, however- I have forged lots of different rebar over the years, and, once you get it nice and orange, it will forge just like A36.Unless you have a power hammer, though, you are gonna get tired of making rebar flat real quick. Most rebar is actually harder than A36, and will be harder, not easier, to hammer flat.
Reply:Actually rebar comes in grades. You will usually see grade 2 up to grade 6 with the six being the strongest, hardest to bend and the most expensive. Locate your nearest farrier and he will peobably give you more than you want for free to very cheap.
Reply:I have made Horse Shoes out of rebar, it can be done. It would be a lot easier to use barstock, and the quality of the steel is so much better.
Reply:Rebar is pretty rough to work with sometimes, Im speaking from actually using rebar and fabricating with it and not from forging experience. It welds terribly and isnt allowed to be welded in use.As far as the forging goes, I wouldnt listen to anyone telling you not to do it, if you have the time patience and want, go ahead and try it out. The worst that can happen is you ruined a few bucks worth of bar and wasted a little time and fuel. Lots of things are done that others dont recommend and the results are often more than worth the costs. If I were you I would just go ahead and try it and see what you come up with.If your looking for a source of roundbar, I would talk to your local suppliers and fab shops, they may be willing to sell you drops at a per pound price cheaper than it would be to buy new stock.

Reply:Find where the local Farrier gets his.... usually they are sold by weight in a box... so the number in the box varies a little....like buying nails in bulk...OP, where are you located ?  Check out ..http://www.abana.org/Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
