Working on getting my "A" ticket here in British Columbia. 5G 3/32" 7018 root.5G 1/8" 9018 cap.  Started at the bottom and stopped at the top.6G 1/8" 9018 cap.  Started on the lower side and stopped at the higher one.  On the "off" awkward side (not pictured), I had to stop/start halfway around and reposition.The pass sequence I've been using for 2G, 5G and 6G goes root, hot pass and 3 pass cap.  4" sched 40 pipe.Last edited by mb_welder; 03-12-2009 at 12:47 AM.
Reply:Hi mb_welder,Why are you using 7018 for root? Seems very odd to me. You don't use 6010 ?.I have been welding on pipe for about 20yrs now and never have seen a welding procedure that uses 7018 when rooting a pipe.Friendly advice below.You might try using 3/32 7018 on your cap on 4". It will smooth your cap out and should eliminate the lumps you get with 1/8 7018 on 4". 1/8 7018 on 4" schedule 40 will generate far to much heat.I usually use 3/32 up to 8" pipe.Preparing your bevels at a steeper angle you should easily be able to cap a 4" with two beads with 3/32 on 6g.The goal in welding for you and your employers should be making a weld as quickly as possible and still being able to deliver a good quality weld. 2 beads takes a lot less time than 3.If you have trouble controlling the 3/32  rod on the 6g position you might try putting a c-clamp or vice grips and clamp it on the pipe to steady your forearm if you already do not do so. Do you always use multiple beads on your 5g? Keep up the good work ! Don't take the advice the wrong way. Just trying to help. I have made more than my fair share of stick welds on pipe in my welding carrier.
