A couple of times ive seen something that looks like a fine long spring being welded inbetween a joint with stick. Anyone know what I'm talking about or what it's supposed to do?--------------------GMC WLDR 140A Stick Arc cheapskatenow with 90% more burnthrough

Reply:I mean I've seen someone actually welding a spring into the weld.So theres a gap between the work, a long spring following the gap, and the weld being made with that spring being melted into it.--------------------GMC WLDR 140A Stick Arc cheapskatenow with 90% more burnthrough
Reply:Have no clue what this could be.Did this happen any where near Roswell, NM?
Reply:Can I be so bold as to ask what the springweld is on? Where did you first encounter this springweld? If you don't have the time to do it right, then you definitely don't have the time to do it over.
Reply:Maybe it was solder? you know, rolled up?
Reply:Maybe it was a really a spring.Zap says:"I'd actually think you could use allmost anything for tig filler..All it is is a precise flame with a sheilding gas..I have taken the flux off of 7024 (3/32)..rods and polished them with a wirebrush and used them..Works rather well.....zap!"
Reply:I've seen it twice, once on thin metal on an exhaust in Australia. (there was spring still left inside my exhaust rattling around)Another time in the TV series "Long Way Round" when some mongolian repairs a motorcycle frame.Last edited by faex; 01-27-2007 at 07:48 PM.--------------------GMC WLDR 140A Stick Arc cheapskatenow with 90% more burnthrough
Reply:I should also add that an electrode was used as well. Quite weird.--------------------GMC WLDR 140A Stick Arc cheapskatenow with 90% more burnthrough
Reply:Hmm, maybe some trick to help keep something from cracking maybe?  (spring steel has different ductility than regular steel).  Hmm.. dunno.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:Sounds like one of those tricks of the trade that never really caught on  ,,kind of a weld through spacer. I guess you could use springs inside tubing for alignment purposes. Alignment tool, backer and ready made rattle all in one. Hasn't been since grandmas screen door that I've seen an off the shelf spring that wasn't electroplated with something.
Reply:When welding a T joint with thicker plate, sometimes welders will place strips of copper wire between the two plates.  As the weld material cools and shrinks, the soft copper wire will crush and give a little.  This reduces the formation of internal stresses in a joint after welding.
Reply:It's called friction welding.. they yank that spring back and forth, it builds up friction, builds up heat, then melts into the joint.............anyone believe that ?  :P***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
