Hey guys, newbie here, and I'm having trouble all of a sudden with my MIG welder.  I'm working on a 1967 Chevy C-10 pickup and I'm currently in the process of welding in my step notches on the rear back-half, and am having issues with my Lincoln Pro-Mig 140 115v welder all of a sudden. First let me tell you that I'm running .025 solid wire, with argon/co2 gas mix. I tacked the first outer plate of the step-notch in place, then ran my first bead and everything was fine. Ran another on the opposite side and it was fine. I went to run a bead along the bottom and got up underneath to start and the gun tip was hissing, and there was an arc, but it didn't make any noise and there was beads of molten metal falling to the floor. I tried running another bead on a vertical piece and encountered the same problem. Got some burn-back into the tip as well. The tip was brand new, but I replaced it anyway just to see if that was the issue. Still doing same thing. I checked the roller assembly, it is feeding fine. My ground seems good, it's on bare clean metal, and my welding area is prepped and cleaned. I don't understand what the deal is???

Reply:1.  How far is your ground from the work area?2.  Are you using an extension cord?3.  Are you adhering to the duty cycle for the welder?
Reply:OK, I just tried a few practice beads on a 3/16" coupon that I cut in half and welded back together.  It welded up fine, and it was flat.  I'm working on my frame's step notch, it is a piece that looks like _/ \_  but connect the top part.  The ground clamp is attached to the notch plate about 2 inches from the weld area, and I have freshly cleaned it.  I'm not using an extension cord, but was yesterday and thought it may be my culprit. It apparently is not.  I'm adhering to the duty cycle, the wire speed is on 7, and the voltage selector is on 4.  After I welded the coupon, I proceeded back to the frame notch and it popped once and then started doing the same thing.  Just heard the gas hissing (have it set on 22lbs on the reg) and the arc flame is burning, but the wire seems to be just burning itself and burning off and falling to the floor.  It is leaving an abnormal soot on my work, but no weld bead.   ??
Reply:crank that wire speed up, all the way!sounds to me like your burning your wire before it even contacts the frame (that hiss is a telltale sign, and the fact that you say its raining metal when you try it supports that theory), remember your working against gravity at this point and the correct settings for welding flat just wont cut the mustard when your trying to push liquid metal up into a joint.im not sure how many wire speed settings that machine has but turn it all the way up, and ill bet that it starts acting like youd expect (you may need to adjust the speed feed back down a little after testing it to get the desired results)
