Hello Everyone.Well for the past week or so i have been practicing with my Lincoln SP100 Mig Welder. I am using standard shielding gas (I believe its 75% Ar & 25% Co2) on mild steel with .025 mig wire. Im running the gas flow at about 15lph.At first i was just welding strait across, but then i realized i probably shoulduse a zig zag pattern. So thats what a majority of the welds are, either a zig zag pattern /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ or UUUUUUUUU's! Please let me know what can be done to improve, Am i doing anything wrong, going to slow, not enough power, wire speed, too fast, etc.Any help would be greatly appreciated.A couple of things that i feel i am struggling with is not being able to maintaina comfortable position, and i feel that i rush the end of the bead. This couldbe due to my confined work area. Once i build a nice size welding table i should be ok.Well here they are! Let me know what ya think.DAY1DAY2DAY3 (starting using UUUUU weave technique)DAY4 (started using /\/\/\/\ weave technique)DAY5
Reply:DAY6 (Attemp to weld pipe)I realize some of these pics are hard to see with the flash.I will try and take some outside this weekend with the sun light.

Reply:Not bad, the pipe is tough. It will take more practice to get a pipe welded up and nice looking. Keep it up!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I can definitely see the improvement in your welds as the pics progress. The key to these smaller welders is higher voltage, lower (than normal) wire speed and a slow hand speed.Another key is to use a hand motion much like your starting to use. Whether it's a /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ pattern or a UUUUUUUU pattern or a full overlapping circle pattern, finding one that is comfortable for you is the key.I tend to weld with a full circle pattern and try to overlap my beads by about 50%.I noticed on your pics that you were using tap setting "C" and 4 then you went to "C" and 3.5....you can see that the welds with the wire speed at 4 were way too cold but the welds at 3.5 were getting better as you were adjusting your hand technique.I would try and bump the voltage to "D" and leave the wire speed where it's at or bump it up a hair...then see if you can adjust your hand speed and perfect your technique.- Paulhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Try a pause at each side of the weld.   DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Nice looking welds. WAY straighter than mine, too. I HAVE to get a lighter helmet so I can see what I'm doing. You're doing quite well. Congrats!Warning: I have been wrong before!New small workshop, small MIG, oxyacetylene set with a DHC-2000 that I'm learning to use and really like. Life is good!Typos are there for those that look for them. I try to do something for everybody.
Reply:Very nice progress.  Like ZTFab, I do the circles myself...mainly it's because that's the pattern I like with stick also...habit.  CCCCCCCCCCCO...holding/pausing at the edges of a Z weave and doing a little wiggle will help blend the edges of the bead in, but you may want to lower your wire speed a bit or increase travel a bit.  It looks like you beads are just a bit high.  Nothing major.Last edited by smithboy; 02-10-2007 at 12:45 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
