gonna be turning 18 and hopefully get a part time job while in school
Reply:Was any part of that post an actual question? It's hard to tell since you didn't seem to use any punctuation.Visit Tensaiteki.com
Reply:yes. i know alot of it depends on location.ill ask this question instead since i know there are some one here around my age or older but go to trades school.do any of you on here have a part time WELDING job while going to school?
Reply:When I was a senior in high school I was able to co-op.That was going to school for two classes in the morning then off to my part-time welding job in a stainless sheet metal shop.Alot of small shops will work with students but most require that our 18 years old. Just remember no matter what welding job you get whether good or bad you will learn things that will carry with you forever in your welding career. The difference in a good welder and a great welder is how many tricks you have in your goody bag. The more the easier you will make all your work look.
Reply:JP.  Don't want to sound like a jerk, but as an 18 year old your grammer skills need improvement.  It's kind of hard to tell what you are asking.
Reply:I believe several of the local votech schools here have similar programs to what Showdog75 described. Note that chances are you won't weld. You'll fit, tack, grind, prep and do general shop work most likely. If you proove you can follow instructions, show up on time, work hard and do a good job, chances are you'll get to take on more responsibilities. If you do weld, chances are it will be in a basic production shop where you crank out the same thing over and over. The pay is low, and the turnover on guys is high because the conditions are usually [email protected] you have  a choice between the two, take the job with the general shop work. If you keep your eyes open you'll learn more in the long run, even if all you do is sweep the floor and move parts around..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I'm going to get in on this point of contention with grammar and take it further.  If I were an employer looking for a part time welder to fill a vacancy and I had your application sitting in front of me written out the same way that you write here I would toss it in the trash because to me it shows that you have no initiative to work hard at the job your applying for even if it was to clean toilets or muck out horse stalls.   Generally your application is the first thing a hiring manager see's of you and that is the first impression he or she will have of you and it is important to you that you come across as professional and serious about the position and wanting to work.  Once you have submitted an application with proper grammar and you are lucky to get an interview you have to present yourself in the same manner of professionalism and seriousness during the interview instead of walking in dressed in baggy sweats with your addidas hat on side ways spewing " yo yo dawg whats up?  When can I start the job?"  which wouldn't even work at a car wash.Because the economy is so bad right now this is an employers job market meaning that they can have the pick of the crop when it comes to people who want to work and have the experience and or educational background to put towards the position they are applying for.  Clean your act up and get your priorities straight and your head on right and you'll be better off when it comes to looking for work.  My nephew landed a full time welding job last year making $20hr and he's only 19 and has went up $2hr since then, had he handed in a poorly written resume he wouldn't have gotten the job.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.
Reply:well guy i took the time to go through some of your post to see just how great and flawless your grammer is. just a couple quotes:ike I said I learned that all to late after I followed a seasoned welders advice and ended up with...-should there be a comma after "like I said"? i think there should be.I progress further and further into the career field of a welder I've heard about our reputations as eccentric reckless and fearless to name a few and tempermentall cranky and unwilling to change...-maybe a period after welder?or comma. Some of it was handled today with my new supervisor and the general manager. He doesn't intimidate me despite the fact that he's twice my size and towers over me it's that I am 41 years old and...maybe another comma after "towers over me"?Gonna be a while before I get my hands on my own box until I get some overtime in during the next few monthsGonna. when did this become a word for a perfect grammer person? and thats a runon sentence also.Last edited by BlackGT97; 08-10-2011 at 11:52 PM.

Reply:when is the last time you seen a country boy with baggy pants a hat on sideways saying "yo yo dawg whats up? When can I start the job?must be the fact that im 18 and you automatically assumed me as being like this
Reply:i know gbm but im not gonna change it for a couple guys who has nothing better to do. i read it and it didn't sound right. but who cares. i could go around all day picking out little things.
Reply:The point is that if you have to fill out a job application....and it looks like the title... it might affect your potential employer's idea of whether or not you are trainable.....Like Andre used to say ' Impression is everything'....particularly FIRST IMPRESSION....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

Reply:I would look at spending a couple more years at a community college instead of a job.  Sure you can do both and but do it while you are young.  I agree with everyone on your communication skills.  English and Math skills will benefit you the rest of your life.  Build your foundation now so you are not living pay check to pay check. It's real easy for older people to tell younger folks how to lead their lives but the older people have been there and done that. Dan
Reply:Alright from here on out I am going to be using near perfect grammer. So because of my grammer skille I am not going to be successful in the welding field. Also because of my poor grammer skills I will also have to live pay check to pay check. I am also lazy because I don't capitalize my letters. And also because I am eighteen I don't take pride in my welding. I agree that most of us younger guys don't get it right the first time, but I tend to fix my mistakes in my projects.DSW, how in the world can you be successful when you don't kow that your supposed to spell out numbers less the one hundred. You must live pay check to pay check. With that said, I am done with this thread and hope to be able to post questions later on this forum.
Reply:' near perfect' ...let us know when you are going to start...It is Grammar .....not grammer...http://www.beedictionary.com/common-...mer_vs_grammarit is ' Skill'  not skille...and it was looking like you were learning something by calling off that project... but you show you have a bad attitude with the rest of what you post... If DSW takes offense and just does not look at your posts in the future it is YOUR LOSS... About being a good welder without communications skills.... you can do that... but do you really want to limit your welding to first line only welding... not be considered for that supervisor /welder job that opens up wherever you are working... ?Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:I have 2 guys working part time for me in school. They go to school mwf from 0800-1700 then work for me on tuesday and Thursday from 0600-1700 and Saturdays from 0600-1200. I won't let them do anything structural, but I do let them weld some small stuff. I just rotate them in and out of my crews, making sure that they have the chance to learn from different people.Go Cards!!!!!
Reply:JP you missed the point.   Imagine your "new bose" reading this right now.   What did he learn, bad grammar and doesn't respond to criticism well. They can and will look at Facebook, this site, and google you as well.  You can probably find a part time job but you may be going up against someone that is semi retired with years of experience.

Reply:Attitude or rather multiple attitudes and assumptions and a lack of patience won't help you land a job.  People are pointing out in a constructive manner that you're grammar should be better than what it is because it presents a lackadaisical mind set.  It's good that you want to work but you have to start out the right way even when your networking which is what your doing here by asking questions because it's possible that your future employer could very well be one of the people reading this thread.Get your temper under control as well and don't be so quick to blow a fuse, patience is an asset to a welder not just in dealing with problem welds but also in dealing with people and a short fuse is in the top 5 reasons a welder gets fired.  I don't particularly care that your 18 but there are those who do and it will be an obstacle if you let it be and if you work doubly hard to show that your not like the average 18 year old then it can quickly become your greatest asset.  And if I was an employer I would be more apt to hire a country boy or a guy who has lived in the country all his life specially if he's lived on a farm because a country boy and a farm boy's work ethic tends to be much better than that of the average suburban or city boy and country boy's tend to be better at fixing things as well.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.

Not spelling words correctly and  lack of subject- verb agreement are very different from what you have claimed were wrong with my post.Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

Reply:This is stupid. why are we all arguing over grammer.if big65 just left the discussion at i have poor grammer skills, then it would be dandy. i dont mind people telling me to work on something. but i will not be told that because i dont use proper grammer on the internet that i will not be successful. and the thing i said to DSW was more geared towared DAND, saying becuase someone has poor grammer they live paycheck to paycheck.what i said to DSW was more of a smart a** comment and no offense to DSW

Reply:To the op I will say yes some shops do hire part time welder/help. When I was working in a sheet metal shop a few years ago the shop did have a couple of high school kids and a couple of guys working part time and going to college. Your best bet is to fill out an application and maybe even ask to speak with the foreman or whoevers in charge. That way maybe you can ask/explain your situation. To the other posters who want to correct grammar, get a life douchebags. My grammar is horrible but the pay me from the shoulder to the holder. By the way, I make 3-4 time more per year than an english teacher. Lmao
Reply:I recall reading somewhere that "A man who knows only one way to spell a word is poorly educated".  By extension, this could also apply to punctuation.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:Originally Posted by brucerWhat would your "new bose" do?I'll say it again, I don't punctuate properly on the internet myself, but i'll be damned if i'm going to cut someone down about it and turn around and botch up a retort with less than perfect grammar... Yes, your grammar sucks also..

Reply:Just go for it and apply anywhere in the local area that has anything to do with metal. And then apply 2 more times...& give it some time.Just depends upon what your local economy is like...Weldingweb is not going to know the answer to that..Get a job welding & take some college classes on the side..Forget this 2 page argument about grammar
Reply:Back to the original question by the O/P, I had p/t jobs while in high school working in an autobody shop and  working for a welding contractor.  Thats how all this welding stuff got started with me, be forewarned it could last a lifetime.  Good luck in your job search."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:I understand what you're trying to say . Go knock on some doors, even offer  to sweep the floors if you have to, but keep your eyes and ears open. At least you want to work and learn!  Which is rare in this day and age.  Good Luck . How's my grammar you old crusty bastards? None of you ever had to look for a job before?   Give the kid a break.  At least he speaks english not spanish. I'm sure there is alot of welders who are damn good who probably can't fill out an application because of a lack of education but someone gave them a chance.  "Want to" and "try" can make up for a lot.
Reply:Let me lighten up the punctuation conversation a bit maybe we can end it with a grin. When I was in school, an instructor told us that punctuation saves lives, then he wrote this on the board,Let's eat, Grandpa!Let's eat Grandpa!
