Here is some stuff an Airborne Sergeant welder creates in his desert shop. The army must want me to do a lot of stick welding because I have over 450lbs of 6010 on my shelf. My welding machine is a Lincoln R3R-400 I removed from the top of a connex. To get it working I straightened out the cabinet to allow the fan to spin and cleaned out about 20lbs of the finest sand available. I got my generator mechanic to wire it in to my 100amp 220v circuit breaker that also powers most of my shop. I have two generators powering my shop one for 220v the other for 110v. Here is the Lincoln that does most of the welding. I also have it hooked up to a Thermal Dynamics Hefty II CC/CV feeder. First is a pullup bar I created for my SGM. I also added some dip bars to one side and more pullup bars to the other. It is designed to unbolt so we can fit it in a connex and take it anywhere we go. I have since then made another for another FOB and other units have come to ask for material to make others. There were some people pissed at me.I made this clamp from a broken C-clamp because sometimes a ratchet strap doesn't do the job quite the way you want it to. Here is a view of my little shop. If it decides to rain the shop can flood so Joe filled sandbags to go around my shop. I redid the table the previous unit left. I made the base about a foot smaller in both directions and got a sheet of 3/8ths steel to recover it. I have 8 1/2 inch holes for my dogs . I even left a healthy overhang for easy clamping. I recently added some levelers to the legs. Here is a wall I created for an MST on another FOB. It was built so they could get A/C in their office for a place to cool down. I even made a welded chain handle for the door.Last edited by Abnwelder; 04-26-2009 at 10:18 AM.My tools of metal manglin' mayhemMiller Trailblazer 301DLincoln R3R 400Esab 875 Plasma cutterBaldor 220v bench grinderVictor oxy/acetylene torch Press brake Military Drill press

Reply:That's pretty slick.I've heard the Ideal Arc is a pretty nice machine. I don' t have the wiring to handle one"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yeah the Lincoln is great. I haven't had any problems other than the fluctuating amperage issue which solved itself by filling with more sand. I have yet to hit the duty cycle or have the high temp light come on. The machine has a nice arc and plenty of power on tap for anything I do. It is very heavy. It took about 3 Joes and an NCO to get it from the pallet it was on to the location it is now.Last edited by Abnwelder; 04-26-2009 at 03:01 PM.My tools of metal manglin' mayhemMiller Trailblazer 301DLincoln R3R 400Esab 875 Plasma cutterBaldor 220v bench grinderVictor oxy/acetylene torch Press brake Military Drill press
Reply:Hey welcome Abdnwelder! Looks like you have a nice little shop in the desert. I was in the army about 100 years ago (we had steel helmets, jeeps and hueys), your work for the SGM reminded me of the improvising we would do for workout equipment in the field; sand bags, ammo boxes etc...God speed and keep up the good work!
