I just started mig a week ago at school. I have been getting tiny burns on the backside of my hand from the spatter. Like today, I was doing vertical weld arounds and I kept getting burned. I pulled off my glove and there were tiny metal balls in my skin. I am using gloves that I used for stick. Is there anything I can put around my hand underneath my gloves to possibly reduce the burnage. If not, its ok. I know I am going to get burned. But it just hurts. ha ha. ThanksZack
Reply:Are you wearing leather, full gauntlet gloves or gloves that have a short cuff, leather palms and fingers with a denim like fabric over the top of the hand? I can't see how the sparks could burn through the right gloves._________________Chris
Reply:they are just the standard leather, i guess regular sized cuffed gloves. i also have a heat shield on my left glove. i got a decent amount of burns from doing overhead as well. it's like the metal falls onto it and than slowly burns through or possibly just heat up so much that it burns my hand. i don't have actual holes in my gloves from where i got burned. i think it's just sitting on there and heating the area up. but today, i had the tiny metal balls in my hand, so i don't know if i need "mig" gloves or what. thanks for the response.zack
Reply:I've had some thing "burn though" my gloves. Go out and buy some nice welding gloves, they are pretty cheap, less then $10... it's a really good investment. Does your MIG run on GAS or No GAS (flux core)?-Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
Reply:I can't say I've done overhead mig but when I was training on overhead arc, the only times I burnt myself (except the odd spark) was when I didn't have the technique quite right. ie. too much of a pool building up and dripping molten metal on your glove.  When you're goind overhead or vertical it only goes one way.  These gloves are pretty heftly for good reasons and the normal splatter should not affect them.  Make sure you have a decent pair.www.abou27.com
Reply:the mig i am using is gas. i have not done any overhead mig, i have only done overhead arc, and i only got one small burn from overhead. i got burned more in 30 minutes on mig than i did on all my overhead stuff. ha ha. i might just have to pick up a new pair, these gloves have taken a beating. thanks for all the help
Reply:They make a pad for your glove that covers the back of your hand. Side toward welding is silver, side to hand, is leather with one elastic strap, and the other leather. Reflects the heat really well for those "hot" jobs! Can't remember the brand-probably Tillman. Also, saves gloves!----------john
Reply:Ive been using Diablo gloves.  They dont last very long (get burned up) but for 5 bucks, there comfy and flexible.  A little light for heavy duty stick, but have worked great for me on mig.  Even with tig, Im using the diablo on my torch hand with a shield and a nice tillman on my filler hand.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:They kept buying us those cheapie leather gloves with the cloth back on them here at work and I'd go through a pair a day.  The fabric on the back would be tearing off by the end of the day.  They finally figured out it'd be cheaper to buy better gloves.  Otherwise suck it up and be proud of your battle wounds. Reply:Miller MIG gloves is the most comfy pair of gloves i've used. The sleve is pretty high, and it fits perfect,It's also thin enough for me to give TIG rods a good pinch.-Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
Reply:If you don't have hole in your gloves then those metal ball have to be coming in the cuffs. Have you got your sleeves down? I never had problems like that. Might try a light duty bungee cord and your cuffs if that's where you're getting the hot ones.
Reply:i do have my sleeves all the way down, cause i grab them and hold them while i put my gloves on so they are down as far as possible. i have one of those heat shield things on my glove, but these kept missing it i guess. i think i just need to get a new pair of gloves. i don't mind the battle wounds, i just hate trying to finish out the weld while my hand is burning. ha ha. thanks everyone!
Reply:my welding teacher told me way back when I was in school "If your gonna be a welder, your gonna get burned" but he forgot to mention how much it hurts when your gouging and some hot sparks land in your boot!
