Being ahobby welder there just isnt enough project to do to get a lot of seat time at home. So I enrolled at the local community college. Got 2 more nights till this semester is done. Then doing an accelerated summer class 6 weeks 5 nights a week. I'm definitely not good but I'm a lot better than before the class. Any one interested in doing tig should enroll in a class. Thanks to the school for giving me a lot of seat time. And it was cheaper than doing it here. I've had my tig about a year and a half. So I'm still a newbie to this. Here are a few things I was thinking about when welding yesterday. Things that either were not understood or were ignored by me when I first started..1. You cant sharpen the tungsten too much. It must be clean, otherwise the arc and consequently the puddle wanders all over. You cant make a decent looking weld that way. Doing some stainless exh tubing yesterday and I had to stop and sharpen the tungsten about 6 times (at least). If you stick it, hit it with the filler or dip it, resharpen it.2. If the puddle starts to wander STOP! Check the tungsten. Sharpen if necessary and restart the weld. Dont chase the puddle.3. Torch angle is also very important. Doing exh tubing is difficult for me. As I tend to hold the torch in one position.. I have to make myself consious of the angle I'm welding at.Hope this helps some of the other new tig welders out there.mm135HTP Invertig 201 With water cooler9" Southbend LatheLots of hand tools.
Reply:I'll just add that everything above is correct!!And that I'll keep it in mind.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:All very good points! Just remember to knock off the sharp burr at the tip of the W when you're done sharpening it, or it will spit off into the pool!
Reply:Thin ss exhaust tubing I feel is a tough task to weld. Its very easy to over heat it and the fit up must be tight... just remember, the more you burn the more you learn.... |
