well the story goes like this:there are a few cracks appearing in the front end loader of my dads tractor. i intend to stick weld them. a few questions-1. its about 10mm thick and i was thinking of using a 4mm 6011-6010 electrode with about 160- 190 amps. dies this sound about right?2.are 6011 and 6010 any good for vertical down?3.do i need to v it out to get proper penetration?4. do i start welding at the end of the crack or a bit past it? like say another 10-15mm past each end of the crack?thanks guys for any help.
Reply:Well if it was me personally I would find the very end of the crack center punch it, and drill a hole thru it.  By opening it up to a clean edge it will help stop the crack from running.   You need to gouge, or grind the cracks out, and I would use a 7018 welding verticle up.  Where are the cracks located?  if you could post some pics we could tell you a detailed way of how to go about it.  depending on where they are you might also consider adding a plate over the weld to help give added strength.  Give us some more detail such as location, what brand and model loader it is and you will get some very good advice here.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:it is a ford 6600 tractor and i cant take photos because it is dark outside and the tractor is going to the next job tomorrow. the cracks are where the loader has the angle bend in the middle. what about 6013?
Reply:also i only have an AC stick welder. 40 to 190amps.
Reply:If the cracks are in the cutting edge, its tough to get it to stay.  Preheat will help.  You have to grind all the way through to get complete penetration.  6013 is better than 6010, but 7018AC would be your best choice verticle up.  Hammack had the best advice.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:7018 is to the best of my knowledge a low hydrogen rod, you have an AC welder, these are not the best thing to use on low hydrogen rods. I have welded front end loader frames on tractors using 6013 very successfully. I have welded a Fordson once with the same problem and I ground out the crack, welded vertical and horizontal using 6013. After I had welded the frame, it was on the bend like yours, I got some 3/8 flat, I can't remember how wide but I'm guessing 2 inch.I heated it red and shaped it over the joined area. Let it cool and welded right round it. That was about 1983 and as far as I know it is still going. It's my brother-in-laws and he would have let me know real quick if anything had gone wrong.Clive
