I have been asked if I could build a hog trap. Of course I said yes. Then I searched the web for them and find several different variations. I was wondering if anyone here builds them and if so, what works and what doesn't.Any tips or tricks would be great. Thanks,Bob
Reply:I designed and built my first wooden boxtrap when I was about 12 or 13, and caught lots of animals from feral cats and Skunks to Grey foxes and Coyotes in it. Some years ago, when 'coons and skunks got to be a problem in the neighborhood, I built an all-metal trap using scrap from a welding fab shop. I think the design could be modified to work with pigs, but don't know if it would be as good as whatever you've already found.Pigs, particularly the wild kind with some European Boar blood, are pretty tough and require a fairly strong design. Being smart and traveling in groups, the free ones will also learn upon seeing another one get caught. I had a contact number for a professional trapper who dealt mainly with wild pigs, and think I can get it again if nothing better turns up here.
Reply:i've always seen people use the square type traps.  ask what they prefer, that would be easiest.  i've alsoi seen people use pens w/ trapdoors and catch 10 at once.
Reply:My dad builds them all the time( I sent him this link)if you you build a pen type it has to be round or they will pile up in a corner and climb out.
Reply:I build several for customers.  I will give some details on what has worked best for us when I get back in.  running short on time this morning...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Bob, I've built several for customers and can tell you what they have told me. They like them as big as what they have to haul them in. The spring loaded door is best because you can catch multiple hogs. Make sure the open end is against a side so hogs can't go out as one goes in. I used a couple of spring door springs. I framed them in 2"x2"x1/8" angle and put welded wire hog panels on them, the ones with the smaller openings on the bottom and larger at the top. 4"x4" mesh also works. Put a top and a bottom on it. I've never taken any pictures though, sorry. Good luck, Bob
Reply:Go with a spring style door.  Also setting up multiple traps in one location works well.  I have one customer who uses one spring loaded style trap, and then sets up a falling door style trap right next to it.  He says the spring door will catch the larger hogs while the little ones will move around the edge of the pen circling the mama, and the falling door will get them.  Definitely need the top and bottom on them, and the bigger the better...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
