I tried them today for a quick truck rack repair, rather than drag the TIG set up out. Much to my suprise the work quite well . I am going to keep them in stock for quickie repairs. The rods in question are Lincoln Alumiweld 43.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:My dad used that stuff, he didn't have a tig or spoolgun. He said it worked but you couldn't see the weld. Then he tried it on what he thought was an aluminum wheel. It was magnesium. Scared the crap out of him when it went up in smoke.Never tired it my self.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have run the alumiweld 43's at times myself. I had never had much luck with AL rods until I used that one. I was impressed as well, they definitely come in handy when ya need them. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:DC is what I run them on. The price is pretty high. I think the last ones I bought were in a 5lb box and it was in the neighborhood of $75. I want to say that a 1lb pack was over $10 It has been awhile since I bought any, so don't hold me tightly to those numbers. Tozzi, what thickness material were you welding? I have never have been able to do well on stuff say less than 1/8th with them, but it seemed the heavier the plate, the better it ran. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:They are definitely handy. You need DCRP, and they like the thicker stiff for sure.I'd like to see that Magnesium attempt. That was funny because it seems like something I'd do on a hectic day.
Reply:I ran them on 1/8" 6061 tubing DCRP, ther run like 15 bucks a pound.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Done a pile of it a few years back on AL cable tray, Mac702 can probably tell you what that stuff is like. Ran it on DC, can't recall the rod maker though, was a name brand. Most 1/8th material at best. Takes a bit of playing to get the right amperage going, but does a nice job once you find it. |
