I have worked in ASME/API coded shops for about 5 years now.. recently started a new job( another coded shop).. I have been there about 3 weeks. Today was my first weld test.  I have a few questions for anyone who knows code.. first off. My test was a 3/4" single V weld. Now, here's the part I don't understand. They had me take it vertical up at a 45 deg. Angle tacked to the table in front of me. I know that a 3g and 4g test will qualify you for all positions.. but what is the purpose of this test? Is it even a recognized test? The shop said that was their qualification test.. and from what i've seen this isn't the first thing that is kinda fawked up that this "coded" shop does.Any help would be appreciated.  I don't want to cause problems and possibly Lose my job. I just wanna do things right and when it comes to the stuff I don't know, I want to know the right way( according to code) to do this.
Reply:They appear to be misinterpreting the diagram QW-461.1 for what qualification positions are required to make welds in certain positions, not the other way around.  Their attempt would be to make it easier to pass the 3G position test, but it is not a proper 3G test.

Reply:CEP, he didn't specify pipe, but I suppose it could have been.  He mentioned 3G and 4G.  4G is a plate only test, and 3G can be plate or pipe (rotated). It's funny, the harder thing (for me) is the open root part of the 6G.  The position doesn't bother me at all.
Reply:Yes I realize he stated plate, but the 45 degree V-groove plate means 6-G, (to me anyway). Seems where I've read of this test before, personally never taken a 6-G plate test, just 6-G pipe. Reply:There is no 6G plate position.  Based on the angle and face rotation, you would be in either the vertical or overhead position.  Those ranges (and the associated diagram) have been adopted more or less across the board, including ASME and AWS codes.  Fegenbush is probably on the money - makes it easier to pass a 3G test, though why they would bother testing on 3/4" plate per ASME is beyond me.
