first off, some people that that make art for, lets say "fairs and such" have horrible welds.A lady asked me to fix this garden art turtle. its head broke off due to a crap design and crappy tig welds. (no filler used) and the artist tried to tig SS and regular Steel. i've read that tigging SS and regular steel isn't the strongest, so i brazed it with a torch. in the third photo, the braze doesn't look good, but i know its strong. Reply:i decided the brazing looks like crap, so i redid the welds with smaw. photos soon
Reply:pretty loose interpretation of a turtle!  Wonder what she paid.

Reply:looks like if you own a torch that doesnt necessarily mean you can braze either!

Reply:Did someone say a turtle? Here's a turtle, and it eats garden snails and pillbugs too; it also doesn't leave rust stains on the bricks: Attached Images

Reply:I actually got my bachelors in art, lol. It was pretty funny watching my fellow students try to stick metal together. The instruction amounted to - there's the gear have fun. I hope you didn't charge her for the repair. I guess the term shiny metal was never mentioned to you, lmao. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Oh dear, llamafur, that was brave. I'm not game to post a photo of a weld. If I post a pic of something I've done, I do it from a distance where the welds aren't really visible.Scott

Reply:With everything said.... In the third photo you know it doesn't look good but it's strong? Not as strong as you might think, no grinding there, so the rust that you brazed to makes it weak. And welding SS to regular steel isn't the strongest..... Structurally ( I can't say )probably not? But it's not what you are thinking either. I have welded SS to mild and it's strong, maybe not under swaying/flexing stresses but for the most part it is strong. The combination's I have done are of same thicknesses in the dissimilar metals, and there are no problems with them.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:tig brazing with silicon bronze works pretty good for dissimilar metals and very thin to very thick. again strong but not for use in any saftey issue area or structural application..
Reply:Welding stainless to steel will only be a strong as the weekest, which is steel. we do it quite a bit in the pipeing industry. Stainless is a higher quality than most steels, so the steel is the week link, if it wasn't a good procedure there won't be rod to do it or astm, aws codes to follow.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:I rewedded the turtle. now its better. I think the lady paid in excess of $100.I ran out of flux coated rods, so i thought i'd give these brass rods a try.
Reply:Why is there even a discussion going on here about stresses and structural on something like this? Its not like this is going to hold up a bridge, or be part of a rolling chassis for a dump truck or something! At worst, I can see some grandkid sitting on it and maybe yanking around on the head piece, so I would say weld it up, grab a hold and give it a good shaking, put some pressure on the head piece and if it holds, it should be good to go! If it breaks loose, try something else!Honestly though! That looks to me like something someone found at the scrap yard!#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:Well,IMHO,  the brazing that was done is actually MUCH worse than the Tig weld on the stainless.  Besides the complete lack of cleaning to the joint area,  which is a must for any brazing operation,  It is obvious that you didn't use canned flux when you brazed with your "brass" rods. You must use flux.  Even if it is on clean metal.  Contrary to what you have surmised,  it ISN'T stronger than the origininal.  In fact it is probably at least 10 times weaker, given the rusty metal and the lack of flux.Properly done brazing can be quite strong, but no where near as strong as the stainless.  Stainless is quite frequently joint to mild steel with 309.   That isn't really even an issue.   What you gave the lady is much weaker. Additionally if you SMAWed it,  then you would use 309l to join the metal after extensive cleaning.  It is the approved rod for joining stainless to mild steel.'Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Tough crowd.
Reply:i still have alot to learn about brazing. the stick welds i put down after i removed and cleaned the brazed area. i've used the blue coated brazing rods before, kinda assumed the brass ones would work the same.
Reply:hey llama fur im going to edison welding institute june 12th which is in columbus on osu campus. ever heard of them?

Lets see what it looks like after you ground off the braze, and welded it.

Reply:Haha as long as your using a filler material that complements the SS grade your fine welding to mild steel, i have pressure tickets P1 to P8 stainless to mild, and P8 to P8 , stainless to stainless, amoung my P1, P11, and my inconel just ran out. You just have to know what your welding, the correct filler application, and how to properly prep the joint
