Keeping the shop organized can be a challenge, please share you innovative ideas on effective, cheap, or just plain cool ideas to stay on top of it. Wire shelving from an old hospital laundry rack, cost me $50 in total. The white containers are from a hospital kitchen, they are cheese containers and best of all they were free. Hanging stuff from the ceiling works well also. Use the volume not just the area of your shop, and keep in mind what's used frequently and what is not when placing things.
Reply:Excellent use of space Wells. Now truth be told how many hrs. did you spend cleaning before you snapped the picture? Looks good.snoboy
Reply:My friends and relatives have figured out one...keep their crap in my shop...their garages are nice and clean...mine looks like a heap always.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:there's no way we could "organize" where i work..best thing to do there is take everything in your way and put it in someone elses way..and make sure they dont put it back in your way......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I’m a terrible shop organizer, so at least I try to compartmentalize. Similar stuff together in a bin.  For a work area there’s three things I always keep in mind - fire, fire, fire. Oh wait, four things, there's fire too!Anything combustible I like inside a metal cabinet or away from the “burning” area. Aerosol cans, solvents and combustibles can fuel the difference between a nuisance fire and loosing the building. There are plenty of  “poor boy” metal storage cabinet systems. File cabinets, trash cans, refrigerators…  One of my favorite are retired electrical enclosures, heavy duty construction, nice doors and hinges, oh, cheap too! They can sit right outside full of gold and the unknowing never look twice at them.Last edited by denrep; 11-17-2006 at 09:40 PM.

Reply:As mentioned in another thread, I recently went on a big organizing spree. On my old workbench, I had stacks of those little plastic tote bins. They did their job, but if I wanted to get the bin from the bottom, they'd tip over Not to mention they were great dust collectors. So I bought some louvered panels made for tote bins and made this:I carried the slat board idea further and replaced the doors on my breaker panel:I used slat board for the doors, which will let me hang whatever on the outside. While I'm at it I can't resist mentioning I recently finished replacing the breaker panel with a generator load centre:  Pic minus cover of course!
Reply:bicycle hooks work realy well for keping lots of stuff up out of the way but still verry handy when needed. i have them all over the place, at $0.50 each they are cheap and verry usefull.i prity much fail the organized shop drill about 1/2 the time. mostly due to lack of time or just working till pain levels make me quit so i have to do the clean up the next trip, and usualy also have to do something else too, so i end up doing many projects befor just getting fed up and reorganizing. right now trying to get ready for winter and trying to get the wifes sewing bizz of the ground has realy paid its tool on the shop but the hooks will probly help some of you more organized guys out. Reply:Nice pics all. Chris you need to put up some posters. To much white.
Reply:I had lots of short pieces (hate tossing stuff out) of smallish angles and flats etc that I used to store vertically in some strong buckets. It wasn't ideal and it took up floor space. Out the back I had a length of 4" PVC sewer pipe. So I cut it into a dozen 18" lengths and I stacked them horizontally on a shelf. Now I slide the short offcuts into the bits of pipe. Makes it really easy to see what's there and easy to pull them out.Scott
Reply:my garage looks like my roadrunner exploded and all the parts stuck to the wallsI'm telling you, it just ain't right. No oil stains and metal chips on the floor,no cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, all the lights actually work,no half full buckets of oil setting around,Grinder with no black spot under it,the sheetrock is actually finished and painted,I'm telling you, something ain't right in this picvture...........I'll bet a crime was commited??Tom

Reply:I just finished cleaning up my garage. I received some free shelving from a friend and fully enclosed the. The goal is to keep all of my junk out of sight and free of welding and grinding dust.So here is what day one started out looking like. It didn't always look like this. Everything was usually piled along the walls so that I could fit a car in the middle. And here is what it looked like at the end of day one. Everything was just thrown on the shelves just to get them off the floor.Day 2 consisted of building the front doors and hanging them.An today was the finishing touches with the handles for the doors. And I too like to use every inch of available space I have. So for the bikes that don't get used that often, they get hung up like this. Now comes the hard part of actually organizing the shelves. I also plan on making the same type of doors for under the work bunch.Anyone have any good ideas on how to organize spray paint cans? I was thinking of building a tray and putting it on a lazy susan. That way I could rotate it and not forget about the cans that are all the way in the back. Any other ideas?
Reply:I found some colapsable containers to keep my spray paint in. They where used by tortila sales guys. Spray Paint cans also fit good in the plastic milk crates.
Reply:Yes, lazy susan or even a big slide drawer. How did you hinge those metal panels ? Very neat idea.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Best Shop Organizing tip - Bins, Drawers, and more bins. When I lived on the farm I had a 30x20 shop with things outside still. I was relocated to Los Angeles and could not afford a shop- or even a place with a large garage so I bought a 28' dry van and parked it in one of the small dock at work. I decided to just spend the money and buy metal bins from Grainger and McMaster Carr and throw away my old large bulky shelves (mainly store display stands). It was the only way to fit MOST of my things in. I still have to leave my taylor-dunn cart, large welder/generator, and 125cfm compressor in the warehouse, but the majority of the goodies are inside. The only bad part is I have no work area inside the trailer, so I have pull everything in the warehouse.

Reply:I don't have any pictures to send yet, so I will describe what I did.I went to a store that sells display cabinets and bought several cabinets.  The first one that I got was for dress patterns, this is made from heavy sheet metalwith several compartmented drawers, heavy duty.  I bought three of these and then went to a "good will" type store and bought several metal filing cabinets for about $4.00 each.  I made frames from 1" sq. tubing, I made these for four cabinets each. I got a couple of long 36" cabinets and stacked these together.  I use these to put all my hand tools and accessories in.  One  of the small ones has all of the grinding and sanding discs in it, and they are all sorted out.  By doing this, everything is organized and can be locked up.NOW, the really good part.  I put casters on each cabinet and a handle on each end. I roll them into an area and can roll them to anywhere that they are needed.  I can chain them together and to the wall so that the illegals and other assholes don't roll them away.  It cost me about $100 for all this and I am organized and secure and fire safe.                Hope this helps            Billet Bob

Reply:I'm not quite sure how a garden tractor ended up in this thread, but I gotta jump in on that one. Here's mine, custom paint, calcium filled tires, chains, sports steering wheel, I flamed the air filter cover and have heim joints in the steering.
Reply:i guess i better start that mower thread.c.schulz you should add a scoop to that mower, it will keep the rain out of the motor if it gets caught out in the rain. i dont know what dumb azz thought up that hood idea but it funnels the rain right into the top of the motor. a few sprinkels and it wont start so you can get it out of the rain  summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
