Here is my attempt with 1/16 6013 on DCEN.  The top bead is set at 50 amps using the foot pedal.  Next one down is set at 30 amps holding the pedal down.  Next is 20 amps, then 10.  At 10 amps, I could run a bead on flat plate. Reply:Wow - 28 ga. or was it 24? Looks like you're on to something there! Not a bad bead, it should hold. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:You and your son did a good job with that.Doing the (very nearly) impossible.Beads look pretty good.Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:OK, I screwed up.  It measures .028 which makes it 23 guage.  Gonna try it tomorrow in AC 150 hz.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Your losing me I think LOL. 6013 on a pedal?   But then thats one of the main reasons I'm here to learn. What kind of machine are you on? tig/stick that you can use the pedal for sitck on?Latest Toys Miller 180 Mig and Elite Mask!!Wright Welder 225ACShop OutFitters 20/20 Bending SystemHypertherm 380 Plasma30 Years of Sparking (Electrical & Welding)
Reply:Hows your penetration?Did you have to preheat? The best things in life all come on a stick!
Reply:I am using an Arcmaster 185 by Thermaldynamics.  Its a tig/stick machine.  My son had the idea to use the foot pedal.  Just seeing if this could be done.  Foot pedal not needed once I got the amps close enough.   I needed a machine that went down low enough to weld the thin plate.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Wow, Dave.I never tried the E6013 rod before and it looks like it could weld sheet metal good enough to do. At least with an experienced hand and a good welder such as you and yours. It still looks a little like a bodymans nightmare though. One of the problems I ran into learning to do sheet metal and trying the stick welder was if you got lucky enough to get any kind of bead, when you ground it down the heat generated caused some wrapage. But still a good show for those asking about stick welding and sheet metal work. Thanks for taking the time Dave and good show Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:But the footpedal will change the amperage for the stick? That could be handy at times.Latest Toys Miller 180 Mig and Elite Mask!!Wright Welder 225ACShop OutFitters 20/20 Bending SystemHypertherm 380 Plasma30 Years of Sparking (Electrical & Welding)
Reply:Yes, the footpedal will change the amps.  I started out at 50 using the pedal to give me an idea where I should be.  I can't read the welder and weld at the same time, so I didn't know how many amps I was using.  I didn't think I would have to go that low. J,  6013 is great for sheet metal, downhill.  Its a "follow" rod.  move fast and watch the puddle.  Neg electrode helps keep from burning through.I would never attempt body work like this, I have the right tool.  110 v mig.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:WOW 10 amps and still blowing through.  Maybe try DC-, its the least penentrating setting. But your speed looks good, keep at it.

Reply:David, One giant attaboy for your son and yourself!  I bought a car recently, 1957 Ford. I know; What's that got to do with this thread?!Well, it looks like factory stick welds on light gauge braces that support the roof panel. Most of all the other body welds are tidy little resistance spot welds.  These braces though, definitely have a stick welded look. Looks like the weldor would strike an ark on adjacent base metal, to heat up, and then move to the brace and (barely) plug weld by burning through the brace to roof framework.Hard to believe this kind of work was done in a high production auto plant. What say you sheet metal weldors? Any thoughts on this? Is it just conventional stick? Now, how do David's welds look?!?Attachment 11050                            Attachment 11049Last edited by denrep; 08-26-2009 at 10:02 AM.

Reply:Dave, being bored and having as many tools as we do is dangerous.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I've been thinking about stick welding sheet metal, ever since the "stick with mig wire" debacle. I think quality welds can be made - with the right power source - and practice. Eh hum - funny you should ask!For your viewing pleasure, may I present the stick welding sheet metal experiment:Attachment 11080I KNOW that this electrode was old 20 years ago. I've been wasting it as the occasional hook or cotter pin! I couldn't find much thin stuff to experiment with. I don't want to derail the thread, let's just say the subject is a thin coated stamping.       Notice the burned out "A". Thin enough?Attachment 11081 Here's what did it. Please excuse the dirt and dust she came out of retirement for this demo:Attachment 11082When I have time I'll cut open the sample and we can look at the back side.Is Ripley still in business?!Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:19 PM.
Reply:Denrep that is impressive.  Is your "subject" thinner than 16g steel?  I do 16g regularly, however I have never dealt with anything thinner.
Reply:I like the machine!  We had some in college.Either I am old, or the college had old stuff.  David RReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.6013's also run very nice on reverse (DCEP).  We always ran those that way in my welder/fitter course.  6011AC, 6013DC+, 7018DC-     But whatever works best for you is always the best way!"A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
