guys, jurys still out on my first welder purchase. mig vs tigafter my first post ,I have realized that to get mig large enough to weld aluminun I would need to increase the bud jet to get the amps needed...But, for the  around the same money I could get either a 200amp ac/dc tig with water cooled tourch and foot pedal or 160 amp ac/dc tig / 40 amp plasma.remember guys I need to be able to weld up the odd alloy manifold /trans case, and hope to do  thin panel work on my old gasser hot rod and build a roll cage ,motor plates  etc.intending to learn all these skills and do it myself as I don't want pay someone and turn up at a car show one day saying, all I did on the car was pick the colour!!Basically what would be  the limitations of the two machines thick/thin and what do you vote forcheers, vernon
Reply:Go with the TIG.Plasma will be strictly DCEP, no AC.Plasma is primarily good for automation, since a pilot arc can be maintained at all times and the welding arc can be repeatedly started without the use HF or touch retract.Access to tight joint configurations is limited with plasma because of the nozzle arrangement, where as with TIG you can change cup size and electrode stickout.
Reply:Guys, brought my first welder today, 180 amp mig .the difference in the price jump  from a 180 to a 250 amp unit $1000 NZ currency I will put towards a tig at a latter stage.thanks to everybody that offered advise over my two postsVernon
