I have a Thermal Arc Power Plus gas driven welder and just purchased a used Miller EXtreme 12vs MIG with 75/25 gas and .035 solid wire. I want to run it first thing in the morning. What would some good first settings on everything be? I will run it on CV electrode DC positive thru the suitcase. What or how should I set the flow meter and the wire speed etc. Just welding on 4130 practice plates. Thanks in advance and I can hardly wait this is worst than Christmas when you were a kid.
Reply:Flowmeter around 15 cfh. Wire speed around 200 to 250 and Volts around 18 to 19. That is all the help I can give.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks I just had my Cheerios and I am headed out to wake up the neighbors.
Reply:dont forget the pictures
Reply:Hope these post up
Reply:Not too bad. A little ropey/snakey, and some undercut on the upper toe of the fillet weld. Were you pushing or pulling the weld with the gun angle/travel?I'm not working with short arc mig these days, but did alot of pulsed spray awhile back, and always liked the smoother/flatter bead of a slight push angle. A drag angle tends to be more humped in the center, although I believe penetration can be deeper if done right.Look forward to more weld photos, thanks.
Reply:Try holding the gun perpendicular to the work. Get used to this, then try some forehand and back hand. Most of all, steady as she goes.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for the info I was pulling the gun.I will try pushing it next time.I am takeing a welding class at a community college and next week is MIG. I like to practice at home so I bought this used suitcase welder I think I like it.I tried some vertical I used the same setting up and down any advice.one weld is up and is real bumpy also provided side shot.second try was down and it seamed much better.
Reply:not to get into the up down debate, but miller recommends down on plates smaller than 3/16 and up on plates 1/4 and up. remember that when you get ready to go verticle, turn down your volts and wfs. some sites say down atleast 20%.while using my MM251, i run 19 volts and 320 wfs on 1/4 plate. this is the recommended settings on my machine and they seem to work for me. but when i go verticle i turn down to 18.3 volts and 290 wfs. this is close to the settings for 3/16. and i run a weave instead of stingers. for some reason, since my surgery i can't do vert stringers. but my weaves are a thing of beauty. or at least i think so. hope this helps."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Those miller suitcases are very nice feeders. I use them at work and they can't be beat.
Reply:I weld 3/8 to 3/4 UP with .045 wire @ 150 ipm and 18 to 19 volts with Co2. Works great. That is what I used to take the 3G with bare wire. I turned wfs and volts down some second and third pass.Ranger 250 and LN-25.DavidWithLincoln hat on. Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor. |
