I may be interested in taking a welding cert test over the winter or in the spring. I would like to practice and wonder if anyone has a picture of the holder to hold the coupons in the vertical and over head position, 1" plate. Something that clamps in a vise maybe? Also, does anyone have the specs on the coupons? I would like to make some of my own for practice purpose and would like to make them the same as the real ones. The test is 3G and 4G. Thanks guys....
Reply:There really is no "real" ones. Go to 10 test facilities and chances are, you will use 10 different holders. I use a piece of 2 X 2 angle iron or a piece of 2 or 3 inch strap about 2 foot long, just put it in the vise and weld you're coupon to it and adjust for height.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:I'll try and get a pict of the stand the school uses on Monday next week if I get a chance. Basically it's a vertical 8' length on 2" pipe. The "arm" is also 2" pipe with a sleeve and T bolt arangement to lock in anywhere on the column. At the end of the arm is a flat plate they just tack the coupon to.As far as the coupons themselves, that will depend on what test you are taking. Open root or backing plate? Tests are done for a given thickness as well. I know the school uses 3/8" for limited thickness, but a while back I was practicing on 1" thats used for an unlimited 3G and 4G test. Practice gets pricy pretty fast when you have to use 1".Edit: I found this old thread looking for the specs on coupons. Jason ( Black Wolf) has a great stand shown here. Much nicer than the ones at the tech school.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=58102Last edited by DSW; 09-28-2011 at 10:02 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
