Hey guys, I am just starting to get into welding.  My MM211 is on the way along with 80cf cylinder, helmet, etc.My first project will be a welding cart, but next on my list is a car frame dolly.Something like thishttp://www.eastwood.com/mopar-cart-bare-steel.htmlI know you cant see much in the pic but it bolts to the holes for front K frame and rear leafs in back.Do you think its OK for someone with such limited experience to tackle a project like this?  I would have jack stands in place when working under the car.  This is strictly for moving it around the garage.  Once I get it where i want it, stands go right back under.Whatcha think? Its not very expensive, so I dont mind just buying it, but I thought it might make a good newb project.
Reply:I don't see why you couldn't do this with a few minor understandings.#1: You spent some time practicing 1st and were able to at least do some fairly decent welds. They don't need to be spectacular, just fairly decent.#2: You ran those welds using the mig on a 230v outlet rather than 110v. I'd also suggest you arange things so they could all be welded in the flat position.#3: I'd strongly suggest you take advantage of the resource you have here to check the welds on the unit before you actually put it into use. Any welds that the majority find questionable, you grind out and redo. The big challenge with this will be getting the front brackets all figured out and fabed to match the vehicle. IIRC those points shown in the link are not in a simple plane. I'd bet you have more time in trying to get those two front brackets all figured out, tacked in place and the holes all lined up, then you have doing the welding. It won't be easy since you will have to have all the parts removed before you even begin the fab process.Looks like a good learning project overall as long as you keep safety in mind at all times and do what you mentioned above. Be sure to keep us posted on the cart as well as your progress on the car..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:sometimes it may be cheaper (cost of material and parts) to just buy new (with warranty)but would be a good project after practice and learning kinda like building trailers you can't beat ready built ones for the price of materials+ laborunless its custom to your specscongrats on the 211 great little machineand yes we like  PICSidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:i'm with propdoctor, if you go price good/decent casters (not harbor freight casters) you might change your mind real quick, good casters arent cheap. then figure in time and material, and you might be better off just buying the chassis cart.   unless you have a good source for good casters..plus its made in Ameica with a warranty. congrats on the new machine..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Thanks for the replies guys.Im going to go ahead and just buy them.Kind of a double edge sword.  I need the cart so I can move around the car and have more room to weld....I need to weld in order to make the cart....Anyways, maybe Ill end up "copying" their design and making a second cart and sell this one...LOL.  I just think it would be a good newb project. Thanks again guys.
