Double tongue

A customer was complaining about having to back his truck too far into the water to get the sailboat deep enough that the keel would clear.  So we came up with this odd looking contraption.  It does work pretty well.  I used receiver tube and 1/4" square tube for the side assembly. 11/16" holes were drilled for a standard hitch pin to keep it locked in either the retracted or extended positions. He gained an additional 4' 6" of length. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Some years ago I made a surprisingly similar device for a completely different reason.  I had a little 4 X 7 utility trailer and a Jeep, but I kept wanting to haul pieces of 20 ft steel.  With my similar device, my trailer with the tongue was about 15 ft long.  I could live with 5 ft of overhang.It worked very well.  i didn't haul much steel at a time so the device worked great. Later I picked up a longer trailer so I didn't need the device any more.John
Reply:Darn ........ and here I was looking forward to a few pictures of his truck backed all the way into the water up to the windows .........(It's been done.  Got to watch a guy backing his powerboat down the ramp, and hit a slick patch of algae.  Next thing he knew, the boat was floating sideways off the trailer, and water was pouring in through his windows ... on a Chevy 4x4.)Great work on the double tongue.
