Reply:sorry' i may have been vague about my first butts they were welded on a dc machine using 3.25 fox sum and also 4mm,this butt has'nt been cleaned used 3.25 pheonix by thyssen why am i getting these red dots. Attached Images
Reply:Very nice.  6013's work much better than a lot of people give credit for. Here in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
Reply:thats a nice looking weldChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:I have 60-70 pounds rotting away, I hate it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:first look around tabs some great stuff it was only a matter of looking,             just what i was hoping to find when i joined.there is definatly a wealth of knowledge great idea these sitesthanks for your time idid this with 3.25 hope you like it Attached Images
Reply:That really is some GREAT looking work you did Pipe Fitter!! Wish my stuff looked 1/2 as good when  using stick.
Reply:spent the last week doing a shutdown, turned out a nightmare tar depot, got a few pics thanks for your kind  comments this is a new mobile picture quality not so good Attached Images
Reply:what kind of movement pattern do you use to get such nice beads?
Reply:i just use a basic side to side rise i tend to let the middle look after itself and concentrate on the lines on either side.if you rise with a slight looping action in my case right to left this flattens and improves the look .if you would like to post, or send images privately i may be able to help its hard not knowing your skill level.

Reply:can you tell me about 7018 i would like to use them and see how it goes i think cost will be the decider im sure 1 box wont break the co,thanksfor the tip.
Reply:Pipe fitter...great looking welds.Tozziweld,  Slag,  Anybody else.... I'd be interested to know what you guys dislike about the 6013?  Just curious.  I use 6013 a lot.  I took a while to get it learn to use it.  My problem was not looking at the right place and knowing when the bead was continous.  I would chip the slag and reveal many holes in my weld.  My problems were finding the puddle and maintaining a correct arc length.  I learned to weld with 6011.  6011 seem to be more forgiving with varying arc length.  I did learn to use it and I like it.  It produces minimal spatter and the slag pop off is in large pieces.  Much of the time it pops of by itself from vibration.  I use it mostly for rail installations and small field repairs.  I have a little 80 amp dc stick welder.  I run electrode positive.  My little welder won't run 7018.  The only advantage I can think 6013 has over 7018 is the reduced amperage for the same size rods.  Oh yeah, 6013 is not low hydrogen, so it doesn't have to be kept in an oven.
Reply:i hope this pic helps to show my weave weasel410 it sort of proves what tapwelder was saying about the slag strength of the 6013 thanks again for your views Attached Images
Reply:did this root pass this afternoon usually use cel just to prove how versatile 6013  is, heres some stringers as well hope you like them Attached Images
Reply:someone said you like photos lads this is a rod i have used for some years we tend to only use them for root passes nowadays, but for me they are the dogs .i say for me ,but they are so easy to use.they give a smother finish burnt electrode pos ,thugh harder to control. Attached Images
Reply:I was told 6013 is basically for sheet metal.  I know it doesnt dig like 6010 or 6011, but I agree that bead appearance is much better, and I believe it welds easier than 6011, but about the same as 6010.  I think 7018 rocks (it doesnt dig as much as 6010 or 11 but outdigs 6013, at least in my case).Excellent looking stick welds regardless of rod, thanks for the post.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:thanks very much doolittle near the end of tar job looking good.listen if you do a ny pipe youl know how awkward these buggers can be.i should know botched loads.easier with stringers. Attached Images
Reply:finished fill pipe. Attached Images
Reply:well lads heres the last 2 butts tried to show whole process gap to finish didnt quite work photos need downsizing.sorry if these are in wrong order.a few threads have questioned which process is better tig mig stick, truth is they all have their place though tig is the future.i see more and more customers asking for tig roots in mild steel and ss use is rocketing.its surprising how many pipe welders this corner of the world have lost the art some great tig men.by the way hope you all enjoy zaps barby open 213 not good pictures. Attached ImagesBeautiful work !!I'm kinda like Tozzi with the 7018, just never ran enough of the other to get used to it.
Reply:its funny how apparent its become over the space of this thread that 7018 seems to be the rod of choice.i know that certain applications call for lo /hi 70 series rods and when this happens we weld to spec.6013 has always been ageneral purpose rod here in ireland,i have used it from i was an apprentice ,so i would say thats the answer[its what your trained on].i really think anyone in a training position should be useing 6013 in early days, once they master 6013 then move on to 7018 16 whatever.they would also benefit from training on root passes.just an opinion.heres the setup of those last butts thanks for your time. Attached Images
Reply:Piefitter, it was the rod I trained on, I still like it and it is one of the rods I teach apprentices with now, unfortunately (for an old git like me) all the young ones get at work is GMAW and when stick is called for the mining companies only have low hydrogen allowed on site so it's an uphill battle. But there are a fair few Oil Refineries around the world that were put together with 6013, and they are still standing so it proves a point.Clive
Reply:too right clive and a fair part of the worlds fleet truth be known.all right we struck out with the titanic,no 6013 arround.heres the finished delivery side all done. Attached Images
Reply:Titanic was rivetted I think.
Reply:titanic was riveted clive.when i joined this site it was with the intention of learning ,from the start this thing about 6013 7018 has i think opened a few interesting threads.it was never my intention to compare them,i didn,t know about 7018 so you see i have learned.i have used about half a tin trying the rods in picture 1.today i tried overhead pics 2 3 i can appreciate why they are popular on lo/hi welds they are much better than the 7016 i have used in the past.but like tapwelder i prefer 6013.thanks for all your comments, pipefitter. Attached Images
Reply:i just cant seem to get my pickups to blend 7018 burns completely different to 6013, should i be using electrode pos any tips would be appreciated.i burn 6013 at 90 to 95 amps 7018? Attached Images
Reply:yep, electrode pos, i run about 95-100 on small bore pipe(3/32" rod).
Reply:appreciate it banshee, next time ill concentrate on pos.
Reply:well banshee got a chance to use the last of my box of 7018s tried neg just couldn,t get it .got 4 20ins butts to do so capped the last one with 7018       and it went well ,i think my problem is the smoke ,dirty screen and im screwed. Attached Images
