I have to take a test soon with 1/8 7018 open root on 3/8 plate. 3/32 root opening and 1/8 inch landing, 37.5 bevel I think is what the WPS is. It`s 2,3,4 g with back welding the root side. Any tips for laying down a good root ? I`ve been practicing and found that pushing the rod in worked better than trying to whip and keyhole it like I used to with the 6010 rod. I was told to never whip a 7018 rod. I ran half the practice plate using a whip/keyhole method then restarted with a drag and pushed the rod in hard, a really tight arc with my temp set at around 115...Isn`t it better to try and run as hot as possible while still being in control of my puddle? This is a pic of My cap. I held the toes and ran fast across the face at about 125 amps.Does running hotter cause less of a chance of slag entrapment ? These are only going to be bent so no X ray... Reply:I took a 2" heavy wall tube test test at a nuke last year. I ran 3/32" 7018 at about 80 amps with a real tight arc straight in at the center of the tube with no whip or weave. Left a real nice bead on the inside and passed visual and side bends with no flaws. Had a 1/8" land with a tight 3/32" root opening. Don't whip or long arc because you will open a big keyhole and then the trouble begins. You will really have to pay close attention to your puddle so you can react quickly as needed. With a plate test you may want to use a 10 to 15 degree push on the vert and the same drag on the horizontal and overhead. Best to run it as hot as you can without losing control. Make sure you make a good tie in on any restarts. Practice as much as you can before your test. Reply:What I've found that works best for me is 1/16 inch land, 1/16 + gap, 3/32 inch 7018 run on DCEN for the root, then switch to DCEP for hot, fill and cap. Reply:@ CEP.... I will ask the cwi for the wps on it... not sure if they will give me an option on choosing my own r.o. or landing... I think it`s going to be an ASME test... that root you are showing looks good... what the heck, never heard of doing it that way, but Im very open minded and willing to listen and learn.
