Close ups came out like crap, but gives you somewhat of an idea. Let me know what you think.I also built this metal rack outta left over pipe.
Reply:Nice flat bed. I can't wait to see more pictures as it progresses.
Reply:Nice work. Maybe it's just the picture, but why the change in the spacings for the cross members on the bed frame?

Reply:Over half the steel sold in the US goes for truck bedsThis one looks a lot better than some I've seen here, it hasn't approached weighing as much as the truck YETI'm gonna get rammed, slammed, and dunked I know it!!!Most commercially available flatbeds for this size truck have 3" crossmembers. I have a 24000 trailer that has 4" crossmembers. Not being an engineer, I let the commercial builders set my guidelines. They deal with liability issues if their beds and trailers fail. If lighter built is good for that application, I go with it.Given the short cantilever from the frame rails to the rub rail in the bed, it seems that anything heavier is overkill. A lot of payload weight lost to hauling around just the bed itself.Highly specialize applications aside, I can't see why so many beds are made like a tankI know there's style issues, but after all, it's a truckI'm so old fashioned that I can't stand the huge aprons on the tail. You know, the big piece of plate that goes almost to the DOT bumper. All just so's you can make cutouts for fancy lights. I still prefer standard lights with a DOT bar on the rear rail, then a simple channel drop down to a DOT bumper. Simple, light, and no added wind resistance.I will give a salute to the newer way of making the headache rack so it conforms to the outline of the cab. It's easier to see around with standard mirrors. But I still get a lump in my throat when I see an early 70's 1 ton with a full width square headache rack that comes straight up from the rub rails with a little 1' x 2' peephole to see out the back window. And REAL WEST COAST MIRRORS, not the stupid little mirrors they have today. Even worse is the idiotic convex mirror glass on the passenger side. Makes precision close quarter backing a nightmare. Glass should be flat with a stick on convex round mirror. Some silly a$$ sticker on the mirror "objects may be closer than they appear". Nincompoops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Every ounce of weight in the bed means fuel, and wear and tear.Ok, rant over"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
