Reply:Generally speaking, What does welding require? What personal characteristics are required for welding? Where are the most oppurtunity in the country? list several What sort of requirements are there for begining jobs? What are educational requirements? What is the average wage/salary? Is there other jobs similar to this one that are equally rewarding? What sort of benefits are generally included in this job? health? bonuses?      Thank you very much,           Noah Moss
Reply:More questions... What are other classes i can take in Highschool to help me later? Is there something i can do now to increase my welding technique? What is the most in demand welding job? what are some alternative welding jobs? What type of welding do you prefer? How many days and hours should i be expected to work a week? Is being self imployed better than working for a company? advantages and disadvantages? Thank you again,      Noah Moss          You don 't have to answer them all but i appciate all that you answer.
Reply:Okay Noah. I'll bite. You came back and asked, and so I will help you out. Here it is:1.What does welding require?  First and foremost, attention to detail. A willingness to learn different ways to get the same job done. Willingness to be criticized for inadequate work, willingness to correct any mistakes.2.Personal characteristics? Motivated to do a good job. Job completion oriented is a must. Inquisitive, and safety concious are good. If you did not like tinkertoys as a kid, welding may not be for you...3.Most opportunity? Endless opportunities. Anywhere there is metal, there is a need for a welder. From shipyards to backyards, there are welding jobs to be done.4. Beginning requirements? A desire to set steel on fire, if only for a second! A basic understanding of metal, and how it gets bent/ melted together. Basic understanding of tools, from hammer to saws to drills.5. Education requirements? Decent reading, decent math are helpful. For advanced welding, you need advanced math and reading, as well as computer skills, blueprint reading, geometry, trig.6. Average salary? About $50 less than you need a week to survive. But, you'll find out, this is the same with every job! Anywhere from $15K a year to maybe $80K. Being an assembly line welder will be right in the middle, maybe 30-40k a yr.7. Similar jobs that are equally rewarding? A job is what you make it. Any job where you create something, fix something can be very rewarding. Desk jobs are not rewarding.8. Benefits? All the hair on your arms will be burned off, sunburn under your neck from the welder flash. Other benefits? The neighbors will bring by their broken stuff for you to fix. You may get some medical benefits at work, you may not. 9. What H.S. classes will prepare you? Shop class, geometry, woodworking class. Anything that wil give practical use of a tape measure is a good start.10. Things to start with for practice? Solder work. Stained glass windows, circuit boards, wiring. Ceramics. You will learn heat input and control, plus fusion from all these kinds of hobbies.11. Most demanding? This varies from job to job. Underwater, high work, windy work, extremely tight tolerance work, very heavy strength work. All are equally demanding, each in different ways.12.Which type of welding preferred? By me personally, mig. It is fast, and relatively easy. Most my welding projects are not so strength critical as to need stick welding(Arc welding) and not so many of my projects are so apperance critical to need tig welding. So mig is the most practical weld process for say 70% of my projects.13.Work hours? This varies drastically. From 4hrs a week to 60.14. Self emplyed vs company payroll? The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side. WHen you are self employed, you whine about slow times. When you are payroll, you whine about making the boss rich. In the end, the easiest way to make a small fortune in welding is: Start with a large fortune, and open a welding shop.Hope this helps you out. Reply:So the deadline has been extended?   I remember, a very similar question, has already appeared, don't remember which board, the guy was shot down pretty quick.   Demanded answers, of course the night before the assignment was due, and was pretty snotty when he didn't get what he demanded.   If and when, I may come back, and give you some valid answers.  If convenient,,,,,,,   I do have some paperwork to get out in the mail tomorrow, unfortunately in the real world, we don't get automatic extensions of deadlines,,,,,,,,   penalties and interest will start ......
Reply:I will say, although I don't necessarily agree with either of them on every point, both Denrep and Rojo gave some very valid viewpoints.    Back later.

Reply:I'll make a couple of points for my .02.  When you begin a lot of what you become is dependent on who teaches you, and what your committment level is. It takes quite a bit to master this trade.  Types of processes, materials, many , many factors. Also know you can continue to learn throughout your career and may never master all factions of the trade. You have to be self driven and as I said before committed. You may find a home in a shop and spend 30 years there, although that is unlikely today, or you may need to travel the country or even the world, so you have to adapt to change well. You may be inside or you may be out in the worst of mother natures elements. Salaries in some places are down but all in all I would say a good welder, I don't mean the best , but competent. will always find a job , and will always meet financial responsibilities if you keep them manageable.  A single guy , traveling and booming in good times can pull down 6 figures if he is willing to work the hours and make the sacrifices. It is also a rewarding trade as you repair some things thought to be impossible by others and can fabricate some really impressive things from raw material, so the job can be rewarding.     I hope this answers some of your questions, but is just my humble opinion."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Guys, this thread started three years ago.  The original poster has probably dropped out of school by now, or is on the six year plan for high school."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:I was always a lego guy myself...My stepdaughter dug out all of my old lego the last time we visited my folks and asked me to build a castle.  7 lego-man scaled floors and we had the tower of Babel, complete with a skeleton and a dragon!  (I may have got carried away....)
