so I just got my new helmet a speedglass 9100xx and i notice this weird shaped. Is this normal i just got it friday and today was the first day i used it.
Reply:There are "a lot" of adjustments in the head gear.Go through them and make sure everything is set equally on both sides and the top.Edit: Then double check them again. I thought I had mine set, welded 1 week with it and something didn't feel just right.Double checked and noticed that I wasn't equal on the head gear to the helmet gear where it slides.(The small; medium & large initial settings)Last edited by skelley521; 10-26-2011 at 09:40 AM.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
Reply:That's what I was doing. I took of the head strap and still had that hump.
Reply:So you completely removed the headgear and the hood is still distorted? It's a pretty thick and durable hood, did it come that way in the box?If it doesn't straighten out, I would return it or buy another. The replacement hood is $50 and the headgear is $20 just so you know.Mine came out of the box looking like yours, but once I centered everything up, it was good to go.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
Reply:I just got it Friday. I took the strap off and going to leave it in the car for a a few hours.
Reply:Yup when stores got mine in, it had that retarted bump in it too. Basically  for lack of a better term i FORCED that retarted bump out of the helmet by bending it out. Mustve had somthing ontop of it during shipping? or just a bad run of moulds from the factory. I have a 9100FX now and it came fine. I find speedglas is hit and miss with their helmets. I went through 4 sets of lens's in about a year, they started out fine but progressively didnt seem to want to darken properly even though set correctly. When set at 11, it would flicker and then stay at almost a cutting shade. Had this happen during a pressure testing day " 5 tests to do in 1 day" and thats the only helmet i brought to the test center. Needless to say i personally went back to welders supplies even though i didnt pay a penny for it and threw it on the counter and said make this piece of **** work or iam going back to my optrel satellite, according to our dealer their was a bad run of lens's and i just happened to get all 4 from that particular run.... go figure!. 6 years of welding with the optrel and zero problems, 3 years with speedglas and have have had nothing but problems. I keep going back due to their light weight deisgn, makes the ol neck feel better after long days in the boiler!Last edited by Pressure_Welder; 10-26-2011 at 01:08 PM.
Reply:I just got it and they only give you 10 days to return or exchange.
Reply:I have a speedglass and optrel. I like the optrel better.

Reply:We have gotten several (10+) 9100xx in here at work and most of them were "deformed" but in time they return to normal shape.  I think some of the guys stripped the lens and stuff out and might have put them around a basket ball and left it in a car or the sun for a bit to warm up.  That seemed to help.  I think its the way they are boxed squeezes them.
Reply:Don't mean to Hi-jack the thread here, but I have an issue with my Speedglas. I think it's an issue anyways.I have the 9100X(Had it for about 4 years), and when I'm watching someone Tig, it won't go dark, until I'm right up on top of the person welding, or close to the puddle. Why Is this? When I stick weld it goes dark instantly, as well as, when someone else around me is stick welding, or Mig, or Fluxcore. It's just when I look at someone Tigging, it wont go dark until I'm closer.I'll be learning to Tig this month, and I don't want to be getting flashed. Is there something I'm missing with my helemet. I never had any issues until now, Any insight would be great. Thanks, Sorry for the hi-jack. I didn't want to start a new thread if I can find my answere here.

Reply:I took the lens off and left it in the heat in the car came and did a lil twist and it fixed it. I did a lot of adjustments and It's finally where I want it to be. I am surprised how much I can see now.  I am doing over head and with the lens size and clear view I think my welds never looked better.
Reply:Glad you got it sorted.Working with nice tools really makes it nice doesn't it Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
