A customer brought in a splitter that had the foot blown off of due to a difficult piece of oak.  He said it has been repaired before but was not impressed with the repair job.Check out the photo's.... Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:From the pics, it looks like the wedge comes real close to the foot on full extension, if it does not make contact. Most have at least a couple inches of "buffer" area. Just curious if you cycled the ram to see how close it comes.

Reply:Some might look at what appear to be welds and consider them a little rough but actually they are a safety device that prevents this machine from being able to build up enough pressure to become lethal.

Reply:alright, that's just f**ked up.  I know nothing about log splitters so i'll shut up about that.  But even before i started welding, I know what a good weld should look like.  There's that general sort of "stack-of-dimes" look that even i knew to look for when buying bicycles, motorcycles or anything that's welded.  yes, whoever made those welds shouldn't be in business.  Whoever accepted that, let me rephrase... whoever PAID $$$ for that weld doesn't really have anything to complaint about, since that weld's been there for a long time.sheesh, i talk to people in the two wheeled community whose never touch any raw metal stock let alone any welding implement and even THEY know what a good weld should "look" like.

Reply:Sure isn't "redneck engineering".  Rednecks know how to split wood.More like "af-- engineering". (can't say here--think President).  Works about as well as the new proposed "National Health Care Plan".If the owner thought a piece of "tough oak" caused his problem, he should just throw a stick of GUM on there.  At least then you wouldn't have to worry about gouging the foot off.Personally, I've always had better luck attaching the pusher block to the ram and mounting the cutting edge at the end of the I-beam.  That way the splits fall free and clear of the machine.I suspect, when all is said and done, the I-beam will have to be replaced.  Not much left there to work with.Last edited by SundownIII; 07-30-2009 at 01:23 PM.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:funny,,,,   I see plenty of internet experts, piling on, can recognize a problem,,,  but not one that can suggest a solution?????   Internet welding at it's best.
Reply:Thats one hell of a spiller..If it could stay together..that sum bitch ought to be able to spit to piece against the grain..or maybe thats what he was trying to do..haha..looks like a fun repair.
Reply:We ended up cutting off all the broken metal.. Mostly in the web.  So after some big bevels and fishplates, it looks like this: Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Good job. Nice beads, especially the vert and the one on the fishplate. Thats a real good example for some on what good welds should look like. The heat marks in the 1st pict show real well the penetration you probably got with those single pass welds. Mig I take it?

Reply:It was .035 spray on a Lincoln PowerMig 300, roughly 350 IPM and 25 volts with 98/2 gas.  The vert was triggered.  The top weld was a full pen and triple pass was done on the overhead.  I thought about running additional gussets under the top plate then figured that he would be better off upgrading his piece of I-beam before dumping more money into something that might break again in the future from the sheer amount of HP running against it. I haven't tried to run the cylinder all the way out, so I dont know if it will run all the way to the stop.. Rough guesses indicate it wont hit.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:So did the I-beam have to be shortened up to get all the broken mess out?  Very nice repair.
Reply:It's just a matter of the next weak link showing itself.  I suspect that reworked butt plate will outlast the black iron street elbow on the discharge side of the hydraulic pump or any number of other items on the rig.Nice fix as expected.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I was able to salvage the top and bottom of the beam with only a loss of less that 1/4".. But the middle was trashed for about 2 inches back, that's why I put the longer doublers on either side.  I suspect that the hydro base mount will be next.  It has already pulled up and bent the flanges that it's welded to. The only answer I see is building an all new slider assembly with much heavier beam.. And since it's such a large pump, upgrade the valve and cylinder.  That splitter has quite a bit of potential with enough money.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Horse power does not in it self make hydraulics more powerful , a 5 hp. engine can produce the same tonnage as that 80 hp. engine. More horse power can push more gallons per minute, cylinder speed,  but the rest of the components are usually limited to 3000 psi max.
Reply:X2I was going to mention that earlier but the focus was on Brainfarth's great salvage job on that butt plate and beam.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
