Does anyone know hard it is to weld 1144, high surflurized, easy maching, "stress proof" steel? The Niagara LaSalle website which produces the stuff says it is difficult to weld. I wonder if this stuff could be TIG welded.ThanksMark
Reply:Sulfur is added at high levels to improve machining of this high strength steel. Sulfurized steel like this, like type 303 stainless steel, is called "free machining".The problem is, sulfur causes "hot cracking", also called "solidification cracking", which tends to occur along the center line of the weld. This cracking occurs because as the weld solidifies, liquid sulfur is pushed ahead of the solidification front to the center line of the weld, which is the last to solidify, and as tensile stresses develop in the weld, the liquid sulfur film along the steel grain boudaries is easily pulled apart.Not sure of all the tricks for welding, try a seach on "welding free machining steel", and let us know. The site you mentioned doesn't say much. http://www.niagaralasalle.com/products/1144.html#specsI'm afraid this 1144 is going to be more difficult than other lower strength free maching steels, because the tensile forces produced as the weld solidifies are a function of the material strength, so this weld metal will more easily pull itself apart.
Reply:welds in 'free machining' steels are prone to solidification cracking due to the relatively high sulphur/lead content. the weld is likely to crack along the centreline. without knowing the application my advice would be don't
