I've been trying to make full penetration welds on 1/4" and 3/8" mild steel using a DC welder (someone else's machine). Beveling the workpieces, running 6010 for the root pass, and covering it with 7018.  Has anyone tried using an AC machine, running 6011 for the root pass and covering it with 6013 or 7018 AC rod?  I tried the 6011.  Had to run it really hot (3/32" rod, 85 Amps). Lots and lots of spatter.  Obviously, I have an "AC only machine" at home.   Comments or ideas?.........tx.........no_arc
Reply:6010 DC and 6011 AC are similar, but not the same.  It should make no difference or very little.  Working on 1/4" and up, you should be able to use 1/8" rod.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I can run 6011 on an AC machine just as good as 6010 on DC, practice practice, practice.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:To be perfectly honest about it, back years ago, I didn't know that 6010 or 6011 was meant to be run on any particular type of machine. I just used whichever was handy, on the closest machine to what I had to weld. Both welded the same as far as I was concerned. And as far as trying to run a CP weld on anything, 6013 would be my last choice, and then only if I was really desperate, and nothing was open to get something else. But to the original question? There should be no problem obtaining a CP weld on 1/4 or 3/8 material, with a small bevel, 6010 or 6011 root and 7018 cover pass.

Reply:i think in this case he means complete penetration.

Reply:Is it easier with a DC machine? ALl I have used is 6011, 6013, and 7018ac on my old miller. The 7018 ac was a pain in the but to get satarted but it looks pretty smooth once I get it flowing. I had to turn the amps up about 40 amps more than normal to get it to work though....

Reply:What is an SR?
Reply:Slight Root...as in Open Root ??...LOL...I really wouldn't have a clue !!Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:No_Arc Mind if I jump in?  I have a similar question:  I am welding a wieght lifting rack made up of 1/8" wall tubing.  I like the look of 6013 but will it penetrate enough? or should I use 6011?  (I have an AC only machine.)Thanks

Reply:If you want more penetration, use a thicker rod.  To join some half inch I-beams recently, I used a 5/32 6011 rod at around 120-130 amps.  I had an open root, about the thickness of the rod and beveled joint so there was a flat at the bottom of it about the thickness of the rod.

Reply:A little education on AC rods here. Any rod that runs on ac will run even better on dc because it has a stabilized arc characteristic for the ac. I actually prefer 6011 for running root passes on pipe over 6010, yes done with dc. It isn't as bad as far as arc blow and it will run when the metal is wet, as in patching water leaks. I've tried 7018AC and just tossed most of a 10 lb box in the trash yesterday. Get some excalibur and try it on your ac machine. You will like it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
