I just picked up a Lincoln Pro-Core 125 at a Lowe's store that was closing. It was a display model with no gun, ground clamp or anything else. Price was right even though I have a Lincoln "tombstone" I use for most work in my home shop. Are there and options available for the gun other than the standard Lincoln part? I read that it's a Tweeco #1 style. It has a 4 pin trigger connector. Are these guns fairly standard and interchangeable? I know these are newbie questions since my experience has been almost entirely with stick welding. Any recommendations for the flux core wire and sources? I eventually want to get the MIG kit to upgrade the unit, but that will be later. Thanks.

Reply:RTFM, find out the model/part-number of the OEM gun, just order that (or compatible).  Plug the gun in and set up the machine and go weld.No 'drama' with trying to get connectors or 'signals' right.Manuals available right from the Lincoln website if you don't have one (or don't have it with you). All of the 'small' Lincoln machines I've seen or looked at the manual for, all list some "-" variant of the Lincoln Magnum 100 gun.  The 'bigger' small machines may go up to a 'bigger' gun, but from about the 175-180 class machines and down they all seem to take some variant of the Mag100 gun.  RTFM though. And a lot (most? all?) of the Lincoln 'small' stuff is either flat-out Tweco or Tweco-compatible (contact tips especially).FCAW wire for 'small' machines?  Lincoln NR211-MP.  Decent wire, runs with the 'low' voltage the small machines can deliver.  Off-brands may or may not work for you.  Not rated for 'critical' work, not seismic rate, and has workpiece thickness limitations (right from Lincoln).  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:I think I only paid $90 for the Lincoln magnum 100, but that was a few (15?) years ago.  I like the screw on gas cone.  I don't use flux core on that machine.  SP100 is the  best way to weld exhaust hands down.  Its built for .023 wire.  I have one of the first SP100 they came out with and still making money with it.   One whip and a half dozen liners.  I burn one or two 10 lb rolls of wire a year.DavidHere is one for $146 with 10 contact tips and extra nozzle. shipped.http://www.weldmart.com/store/lincolnmig.htmLast edited by David R; 11-07-2011 at 05:50 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
