I have a 2 car kaufman trailer that i just bought and alot of the deck weldsthat hold the deck to the frame are cracked. im assuming is from flexing. I will be repairing it with a dynasty 200, what is best rod to use when i stick weld it?"The Name of Jesus is a lightning rod because The Name represents the division of life between good and evil, God and Satan, light and darkness, righteousness and sin, heaven and hell"
Reply:maybe god will show us some pics.
Reply:What is the trailer made of steel or aluminum? Yes a picture of the area to be repaiired would allso be nice.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:I would use 7018 1/8 as long as its steel.. grind area to be welded...
Reply:Wannaweld,The 7018 is a good choice IF you have a rod oven OR a CAN of fresh rods.  If they are out of a box or sealed only in plastic,  they will need to be put into a rod oven and baked due to them being low hydrogen rodsA 6011 may be better for you if you don't have the luxury of a rod oven or a fresh can of 7018's.  You may be dealing with a lot of paint, rust etc.  Of course the best policy is to grind it till its clean, and bevel out the cracks.  The 6011 will  not need special handling as a general rule and can be used without heating.   It will have a fairly forceful penetration, so be careful not to run the rod too hot or you'll blow through. But the 6011 will handle the rust, paint and scale quit well. If you can get it cleaned and beveled,  a 7014 will lay an awesome bead.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:If it can be cleaned, I would use 7018. If not 6010 or 6011 perhaps.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:"it's the deck plating that's cracked" or something like thatNot bein' an expert here, I'd go with whatever rod you feel comfortable welding with overhead.  7018 is pretty goodThrow the rod oven in the trash.  Great on a perfect day in a perfect world.I got one, but it's mainly for really HIGH humidity days when nothing else works. You aren't doing code welding hereIf the welds have cracked or broken, seems the real problem is how to close the gap that's been caused by the seperation.  If the deck is still close to the channel, no big deal.  If the deck has sprung, you have to find a way to press the deck back down to the channel.  Weight on top would be my first go to.  No filler likes wide gaps.  Makes the job harderJust some of my twisted logic"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Tangle...More "farm" trailers have been built with 6011 than probably any other rod, because farmers always use rusty metal...lol or they recycle something else like a boat trailer or mobile home axles.  My feelings are that the 6011 would be better. After all the fear mongering about "wet" 7018s especially for use in an area already receiving crack stress,   I'd wonder about it.(But I guess what could be the worst that could happen?)Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Lugweld, probably should clarify hereI'm not a top of the rack metal dude.  I work with old OLD stuff.  Usually by the time it breaks, it's really a lost cause.  SortaAll I know how to do is bring it back to some sort of usefull life.  Might not be up to the latest standards, but it sure works when it's done. The white glove thing doesn't apply here. It's not always by the book, and in my situation......doesn't matter. It's a dose of reality.  AND REALITY BITESTake what I say with a dose of smelling salts.  Probably need 'em to bring yu off the ground after ya hear some of the stuff I sayI don't do pipelines, or mend nuclear reactors.  I work on junkYeah, any rod the OP chooses would probably be right.  Doesn't really matter, just as long as it worksThe holding ability of a continous weld is amazing.  Look at the crappiest welds on something, and look how long they've done their job.  One inch of continuous weld will hold a lot of force.  AmazingI got the books too.  Sometimes I don't get around to reading them  (well, I do actually)But you don't work with a book, you work on a hot day, piece of rusted crap laying the yard, hot tired, and needing to get back to work with the rusted piece of crap you're working on.  Ain't always perfect.Start looking at the practical aspects of a repair.  It isn't just about the weldment.  It's sometimes about how to bring damaged metal back to a position where you even have a chance to repair it.  It's frustrating, and teaches you a lot of good stuff. It's all about smoogieng smoogying  the metal.  Cheating it back into place.  And doing your best to keep it where ya smoogied it.  ROFLMAO"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Farmer Samm, I couldn't agree with you more. I don't know how many will admit it, but real life welding and repair just doesn't deal with a hot box on your truck or at your job site. The only time I ever used rod that came out of a hot box specifically for the purpose of having fresh dry rod, was to certify. and to weld in a nuke plant. They can be tough. Now granted, in the shop we had a hot box. It was a old fridge I got off the curb. I pulled out the refridgeration unit and put in a 75 watt bulb with no off switch. bulb ran 24 / 7.  It kept that box real warm.As far as the trucks went. We carried the blue tubes for the wierd rods. ss, nirod, ect. But the 6010 and 7018 were in the original packing tins. some times you went through a tin in 2 days, sometimes 2 months. No hot box. I have welded from my trucks everything from buckets to moment connections to trailer hitches and all sorts of stuff in between. And yes, the moment connections had to be UT'd  Never a failure. I don't know, maybe I am just frustrated about all this ultra exact procedures we are supposed to follow that in the real world just don't happen.Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
Reply:Thanks guys fo all the input i have plenty of 7018 and 6011. The trailer is in good shape and just hsurface rust. The grinder will easily clean it up fast. All my rods are just in the plastic tubes what is the problem with 7018 not being in an oven?"The Name of Jesus is a lightning rod because The Name represents the division of life between good and evil, God and Satan, light and darkness, righteousness and sin, heaven and hell"
Reply:Wannaweld,7018 is classified as a low hydrogen rod.  The moisture in the atmosphere is drawn into the rod and as the rod is consumed, the hydrogen from the water(moisture) is introduced into the weld and CAN result in cracking or reduction in metal strength through hydrogen embrittlement.   But as Samm pointed out, plenty of people use them every day.  The difference between the open storage of a 6011 and a 7018 is something I never have fully understood myself.  I do know that the fluxes are entirely different and that alone may make the difference in storage practices.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
