What are some good books for a beginner to read to get a better understanding of the welding process?  I am looking for something better than the DIY books that can be purchased at the same time you get the welder but that aren't so technical I'd need an advanced engineering degree to understand them

Reply:jarhead,I'd recommend going to millerwelds.com and clicking on the resources tab.  That will take you to an offer for their "Student Pack".  It's $25 including shipping.  Best money you'll ever spend related to welding.Includes a GMAW Handbook, an excellent GTAW Handbook, a Pulsed GMAW handbook, welding calculators, and a bunch of other useful goodies.Lincoln Electric also has some excellent references, but you have to "pick and choose" those you're interested in.  Their best reference is the Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding, which is commonly referred to as the Welding Bible.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:i agree with the Miller kit. 2 other great books are "Welding Fabrication and Repair" questions and answers" by Frank Marlow. #2 is "Metalworking Sink or Swim" tips and tricks  for machinists, welders, and fabricators, by Tom Lipton. Barnes and noble carries them. they are around 40 bucks each. between the 2 they cover just about anything you want to know about metal working.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:Second or whatever on the $25 Miller "pack" and the Marlow Q&A books (International Press). I've also got Jeffus and a few other textbooks, yuck.XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Student pack appears to be $70.
Reply:yipes, I paid $25 for mine here http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/tools/guess they must've jacked the price when they added "color" (the econo set I have is mostly b/w)Online, ESAB has a good collection of free materialLast edited by wirehead; 11-14-2011 at 04:25 PM.Reason: ESABXMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.

Reply:The Miller collection is excellent.  If you are baulking at the price, consider that many/most/all? are .pdf files available on line.ESAB also has a collection but they are written like power-point presentations.  Very lightweight.  I think ESAB makes them available free as well."Welding Fabrication and Repair" is a good book that even gets you at least thinking about the right things when it comes to a project.  Contains a decent enough intro on strengths of materials as well."MetalWorking Sink or Swim" is awesome! - the chapter on bending with heat is worth the price alone.  Imagine if you had some old-timer walking you through your first projects on a job.Books to avoid:Pretty much anything on the hotrod press or SA design.  The books are pretty to look at but are devoid of real info.  Read the Miller books instead and fear any books that contain information about what they got away with. Also avoid "Modern Welding" is an old college manual that is way too weak on details.  Lots of stuff about plasma welding, laser welding etc., nothing that you can actually use.  I have that book and its always the first book I go to look for some obscure detail like what filler to use with blah blah alloy etc. and I'm almost always disappointed and need to look elsewhere. There are a couple of DVDs that I can recommend.  Covell's series is very interesting, but I think one of the best is HTP's TIG welding.  That one you can see what is going on the best.  Steve Bleile's videos are a bit older - but straight forward and to the point.  Not the most exciting or even interesting ones.  There are place on-line where you can rent them.  I don't think any of the videos are worth buying (unless you can get them for under $15).If you want there are books on weldment design and strength of materials that are more or less college books.  Check your nearest college used book section to see if you can get them at a cheap price.   They are intense when it comes to math but I find that if I actually write down what all the symbols mean (a cheat sheet if you will) I can pretty much follow what is going on.  Remember, the books are geared to lazy college students that have been bing drinking the weekend before.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:Unless I am looking at the wrong thing, the student pack is $70.00 but still looks like a good deal.
Reply:Wow.That's a pretty significant price increase on the Student Pack from Miller.Hadn't priced the set since I ordered 4 sets last year for some guys I was teaching.Does look like they've upgraded the GMAW handbook and spiral bound it.In my estimation, even at $70 it's still a good deal.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I'm currently in the Ventura Ca, CC program, we are using the " Welding Technology Fundamentals" by William A. Bowditch. This is a great book available at Amazon. We have a huge, well run welding and fabrication program.
Reply:The text for my welding classes is Welding:  Principles and Applications by Jeffus.  It seems to be a pretty good book.  One thing I learned when shopping for these types of books is to research used books at several different on-line stores.  If you are just buying for you own use, you don't necessarily need the latest edition.  I managed to save over $150 from what was being sold in the campus bookstore versus what I purchased on line.  Same book, two editions older, bu still had all the info I needed for my classes.

Reply:I have a copy of "The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding" put out by lincoln if you can use it. Its the 14th edition. In like as new conditionIf you can use it $18.00 will cover shipping.
