Hello all, some big wigs at work got the drift that I can weld, they want to weld short lengths of chain onto the backside of pucklocks that they have on the vans....you know, two pieces on either door of the van, and a "puck" style lock....A bunch of guys put them on the bumpers and drive off....45 bucks down the tubes....Problem being is when you try to weld it, it just blows craters in it, and no beading.....what the heck is this stuff made of....????? Hardened steel, stainless......I'm stumped.Miller blue star 2eLincoln 175

Reply:Wow, Zapster. It must be hell going through life without the ability or sense  to search Google.
Reply:just for zap...   http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl...-8&sa=N&tab=wipurely a guess but i'd imagine the locks are made from a VERY hard steel alloy. no point in making a lock out of a softer, easily worked and welded material as they need to be difficult to tamper with

Reply:getting back to the topic, i just looked at one that my parents have. it is chrome plated and has the term "HARDENED" across the "bolt" (i'm not sure if that's the correct term... the part that moves). i'm not 100% positive that it's chrome plated across the bolt, but it's a lot shiny-er than the rest of the lock. the housing has been stamped with "STAINLESS STEEL" on both sides. the key is brobably brass/bronze and the internals seem to be brass/bronze also. hope that helps.later,Andy
Reply:Those locks look interesting, haven seen one my self but it strikes  me that they are made to rather close tolerances and don't have much room to tap into.Welding may distort them? What about a    -l_l- (that didn't come out right ) shaped bracket on the door next to the lock to conveniently put puck into , at worst if you drive off the puck wont be lost?A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:I have welded both those locks and there brackets on for people with 7018. No problems on either end, BTW they were Master brand.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Hope you're still checking this thread.  Perhaps, have the locks made so the key is a "captive key".  These worked well at the gun club I used to be a member of.  Here's a short on how they work.Lock is opened with the key, but remains unlocked and the key stays in the lock until it is relocked. You can't get your key back unless the lock is returned to its locked condition and then the key comes out.The only drawback is the driver locking the lock and removing the key and placing it on the back bumper.  Otherwise, the key stays in the lock and the driver has to lock the lock back before getting it out to continue.
Reply:Geez....you guys are great....sorry to start a little tiff, but yes, I thought I was getting crapped on just a little bit....As far as everyone that posted in a positive way...KUDOS, you guys rock!!!Tozzi, 7018 huh....I must admit, didnt even try that, went from flux core, right to blumax (stainless smaw)....should probably have tried that first. Brett, I thought about that too, a little lock holder...if you will.People have to remember, not everyone is a certifed, underwater boilermaking, nuclear heliarc, 5p open butt, oxygen lancing, welder.some of us just like the smell of melting metal, sparks, heat, and seeing something, emerge from nothing.....some of us would give a toe to get a job as a welder, but some things are holding us back...............Think about your apprentices, and people that envy what you do!!Miller blue star 2eLincoln 175
