Ok, for those of you craftsman who enjoy building stairs, I have a challenge for you.Take a look at this site. http://stairporn.org/Specifically, go to 'Metal Stairs' in the menu down the right side of the page and check out  some of the fantastic creations someone has dreamed up!I love the 'Genetic Stair' on the first page, but the next 'Steel Band Staircase' really shows what someone can do with a little (OK, a LOT) of planning and a simple idea. For some wild ideas, check out the 'Cabinet Stairs' under the Storage Stair heading. Some pretty unique thinking!LaneLast edited by Photo; 08-06-2009 at 10:26 PM.

Reply:Some of those stairs are absolutely awesome! Unfortunately few of the really good ones would make code requirements for things like railings or open treads. Shame, we have legislated unique out of design, because of the stupidity of some..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Thanks for that link.It is amazing to see what we can come up with when we think outside the box. This has to be my favorite:Don't know if I would want to use it daily, but it looks great.
Reply:I'm kind of embarrassed of how much time I just spent looking at that site.  Some very smart solutions -- like the one square meter footprint mjb just posted.  I wish the designer would publish the plans for it.Some really ingenious and creative stuff.  It gets you thinking.(And is it just me, or in the photo mjb posted above, doesn't it look like the lamp on the left has an actual 3D base, but is then painted on the wall once you get above the baseboard line?  I'm sure it's just an optical illusion or quirk of the photograph.)Last edited by Jack Olsen; 08-07-2009 at 02:21 PM.
Reply:Jezzz....thanks Lane I spent way too much time looking at those, that is fantastic work, the first red one is my favorite also.  Too bad I live in ranch, makes me want to go our and build some...thanks for that site.

Reply:Man, good looking stuff, but some of those free floating riserless straight edged designs look like real shin busters.  Wouldn't want to rush up those and step a little bit too far forward... --Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Unreal .....that one square meter staircase is just too cool.
Reply:Going up wouldn't be as bad as going back down, now that looks to be scary.
Reply:I just finished a spiral staircase for our cabin we plan to move into.  I wish I would have seen this site prior to the build.  Thanks for postingGeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:Here is my lame attempt at a spiral staircase for a cabin we plan to move into.Since this pic, handrails have been added on each side of the loft.Again, wish I would have seen the referenced site prior to the build. Reply:I think a lot of those stairs need handrails. I also think a lot of them look like ladders more then stairs. There are definitely some of them in which alcohol should not be involved.

Reply:One of these days I'm going to tackle a set of spiral stairs.  I always thought they were cool.  I pretty much have all the materials I would need, just laying in my metal heap.Awesome pics on the linked site.Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:Thanks for the link! Good info! However I did see some ball busters! "LOL"
Reply:Their site must be down... I can look at the thumbnails though googles cashe, but they must be a fairly new site since http://www.archive.org/index.php dosnt have them listed.  From what I see in the thumbnails, they have an impressive collection of pictures.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
