I have been doing some welding for a customer who is a general contractor. I do all sorts of stuff for him, and lately he has been asking me to do some very big hold down brackets and a couple columns with beam buckets and stuff like that.He has been very happy with my work and wants me to start doing some much larger structural pieces for him.The other day he mentioned that they were going to have a company ( I assume some CWI type peeps) come out and "watch me weld".The project he is working on is a multi million dollar house on the Ocean in the central coast of california. It is a big deal and has been a multi year project.Any idea of what to expect from this and what they are going to require of me?Thanks for the advice,RussMiller 302GMIller 12RC SuitecaseMIller 30A spoolgunHF-251D-1WP17 Tig torchSmith HD torchHypertherm 45Jet drill pressHF 7X12 wet cut horizontal band sawPlasmacam CNC table
Reply:If you are doing structural to code, then I believe you'll need an L.A. City welding license. Consist of written test and practical test which will take you several months to complete. The inspector will only be there to inspect your welds and may stop you from doing any work .
Reply:Could be all they will do is watch to see if you employ proper weld practices such as weld and joint prep, preheat and post heat if required, observation of inter-pass temps if required, use of a rod oven at proper temps for lohy rod, etc..  May check out the condition of your shop and insurance specifics.  Hard to tell.  I would be asking him the reasons so preparations could be made if needed.  Good luck, Bob."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.

Reply:The L.A. City welding license is used through out the state and even other states use it.
Reply:the only time i ever been asked for a city of LA cert was when the finished parts were going to the city of L.A.what your probably going to need at bare min is a W.P.S.  and a 3G D1.1 certs  bare min.     I would read the notes on the drawings and find out what spec they are welding to.   You might need to weld this with a T-8 wire.  with the proper charpy V-notch ratings.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
