I have been welding since high school around the age of 13 and it's been 20 yrs of welding. I am looking to move into the quality control and testing aspects of the trade.Could anyone tell me the best route to take for me to accomplish this?
Reply:If you work for a company that offers welding inspector positions see if there are any level 1 tech positions open, you can work as a tech 1 until you get your certifications. If not then find a AWS CWI class and then take the test. After you earn that, the foot work is up to you, I suggest you get ready to learn all you can about the codes that you will be working with. If you dont like reading and more or less going back to school better think about it.....inspecting using API 1104, ASME IX and DOT 192/195 is a handfull and thats not counting AWS D.1.1.....not to discourage you at all, but be prepared to do some reading and learning........its not all that bad but it is a switch from working with your hands to using your brain (I was a fabrication pipe welder for 26yrs). The AWS web site has all of the dates and prices for the CWI classes (they are very good) and exams...along with alot of other training that they have available.A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top......
